New Zealand’s islands

Five make easy day trips from Auckland or the Kāpiti Coast; Aotea and Rakiura reward a few nights, and the Chathams are flight-only.

All eight are at their best from January and February. Rangitoto Island is the quickest to reach, direct from Auckland in about 30 minutes.

How the islands differ

Distance sorts these islands first. Five sit in the Hauraki Gulf off Auckland, and Kāpiti lies 5 km off the coast north of Wellington. Rakiura Stewart Island in the far south and Rēkohu Wharekauri Chatham Islands, about 800 km east of Christchurch, each deserve a few nights.

In the Gulf, choose by the day you want. Waiheke is the only one with a real wine-and-food scene and plenty of beds: the easy couples’ weekend. Rangitoto is a volcano climb with nothing for sale, best as a half day. Tiritiri Matangi is for birds, including takahē, kōkako and hihi. Kawau is a gentle heritage day: Sir George Grey’s Mansion House and copper-mine walks.

Aotea Great Barrier Island is the Gulf island for staying put. It is off-grid and a certified Dark Sky Sanctuary, with hot springs and the Auckland region’s only multi-day wilderness walk. Its tourism site recommends at least two nights. It suits self-sufficient visitors, not anyone expecting restaurants or buses.

For birds, choose Tiritiri Matangi from Auckland or Kāpiti from Wellington. Both are predator-free, and on both a night ashore is how you look for little spotted kiwi. Tiritiri’s night is a shared DOC bunkhouse; Kāpiti’s is a catered stay with a guided night walk, from NZ$1,249 a couple in October 2026.

Rakiura and the Chathams suit wildlife lovers who can live with changeable weather. Rakiura is the simpler trip: kiwi tours, Ulva Island and a Great Walk, all from the small township of Oban. The Chathams add Moriori history and endemic birds, but most land is private, so your host helps arrange access to most sights.

Getting there

Rangitoto, Waiheke and Tiritiri Matangi ferries leave Auckland’s central waterfront, so none needs a car. Kawau’s boats leave Sandspit, near Warkworth, so plan on a drive north.

Small planes from Auckland reach Aotea’s Claris or Okiwi airfields in about half an hour. SeaLink’s ferry takes 4.5 to 5 hours but carries vehicles, and docks at Tryphena, 40 minutes’ drive from Claris. With no regular public transport, book a car or shuttle too.

The Chathams are flight-only: Air Chathams is the only airline, and no passenger ferries run. On its schedule from 5 October 2026, it flies from Wellington and Christchurch, with direct Auckland flights only in peak summer. Rakiura takes two legs: get to Invercargill, then take the short hop to Oban or the hour-long ferry from Bluff.

Kāpiti is reached only with an approved operator from Paraparaumu Beach. From further away, fly to Wellington and drive or take the Kāpiti Line train up the coast.

Before you book

The group’s catch: the boat or the plane sets the terms. Four decisions matter.

Check the calendar. Tiritiri’s public ferry runs Wednesday to Sunday, and Kāpiti Island Nature Tours sails only from September to June. Kawau’s Mansion House opens only for group bookings in July and August, the Aotea ferry drops to as few as three days a week in winter, and Rakiura’s Wild Kiwi Encounters tour skips winter.

Build in a spare day. Rough seas stop ferries and fog grounds small planes, sometimes for a day. For Aotea, Rakiura, Kāpiti and the Chathams, leave a night before any onward flight and buy insurance that covers weather delays.

Book the bed with the transport. Beds are scarce: three off-grid baches on Rangitoto, a Tiritiri bunkhouse often booked months ahead, room for 24 guests on Kāpiti, and Hotel Chatham, which 1News said in January 2026 holds about 95% of the Chathams’ accommodation. Book early for summer and the school holidays.

Pack to be self-sufficient. Rangitoto, Tiritiri and Kāpiti sell no food, and Rangitoto has no drinking water. Pest-free islands expect clean shoes and sealed food, and dogs are banned from most of the group’s conservation land. Aotea and Rakiura have no banks, so carry some cash.
