The short version
Rakiura Stewart Island lies south of the South Island, reached from the bottom of the South Island by a 20-minute flight from Invercargill or an hour’s ferry from Bluff. It is a domestic trip with no border, a single village called Oban on Halfmoon Bay, and a national park that DOC says has seals, penguins, kiwi, weka and many other birds.
It suits nature lovers, trampers and anyone who wants a quiet few days. Walk the Rakiura Track, take a water taxi to Ulva Island, or go out at night to look for kiwi. Families with older children will manage fine; the village is small, easy on foot and has a health centre.
The catch is weather and cost. Conditions change quickly, the sea crossing and flights can be disrupted, tours are pricey, and this is not a beach holiday. Our verdict: a strong short nature escape, if you plan for rain and spare days.
Who Rakiura Stewart Island suits
Each score is out of 5, against the other islands we cover.
Best for
- Nature: 5 out of 5.Kiwi, penguins, seals, weka and forest birds in a national park, with Ulva Island a short water-taxi ride away.
- Adventure: 4 out of 5.The 37 km Rakiura Track, kayaking, water-taxi trips and wild coastline, with huts that must be booked.
- Rest: 4 out of 5.A small village with limited mobile coverage makes switching off easy, and the island’s dark skies suit stargazing.
The catch
Weather and costConditions change quickly, the crossing and flights can be disrupted, tours are pricey, and this is not a beach holiday.
Show the other nine ratings
- Families: 3 out of 5.Short flight or one-hour ferry and a small village, but wet, muddy weather and costly tours suit older children best.
- Couples: 3 out of 5.Quiet lodges, stargazing and small-boat trips, though the island is more outdoors than romance.
- Honeymoons: 2 out of 5.Remote and atmospheric, but weather is unpredictable and there is little of the pampering that most honeymoons want.
- Culture: 2 out of 5.Guided village and bays tours cover the island’s story, but culture is a minor theme next to wildlife and walking.
- Food and wine: 2 out of 5.A handful of village eateries, one supermarket and a lot of seafood, not a food destination.
- Value for money: 2 out of 5.Getting there, tours and power all cost more than on the mainland, and ferries and flights are weather-dependent.
- Luxury: 2 out of 5.Lodges and hosted stays are listed, but choice is small and top-end facilities are limited.
- Beaches: 1 out of 5.Pretty bays with cool water and changeable weather; this is not a swim-and-sunbathe island.
- Snorkelling and diving: 1 out of 5.Diving is offered by local operators, but this is cold southern water rather than a reef snorkelling destination.
When to go
Rakiura has no dry season to speak of. DOC warns that strong winds, hail and heavy rain are possible at any time of year, and the island’s own visitor site calls the weather often unpredictable. The charts below show the temperature and rainfall pattern; read them as a guide, not a promise. Pack layers and waterproofs whatever the month.
Summer, from December to February, is the busiest time, and RealNZ advises booking the ferry, accommodation and experiences early. That is also when the days are longest and the hut fees on the Rakiura Track are highest. Winter is quieter, and DOC’s track fees drop, but some experiences do not run: RealNZ says Wild Kiwi Encounters is one of them. If you want a kiwi tour, check the season before you book.
There is no cyclone season here. The risk to your plans is a stormy day that cancels a crossing, so leave a buffer before an onward flight. We could not verify a regular annual event worth timing a trip around.

Where to stay
Almost everyone stays in Oban, because the ferry terminal, flight depot, supermarket and visitor centre are all there. The other choice is to sleep on the Rakiura Track in a DOC hut or campsite.

Oban (Halfmoon Bay)
The island’s only village, with the ferry terminal, flight depot, supermarket and ATM, visitor centre and health centre. Budget, hosted, motel, lodge and self-catering stays are all here, and most things are walkable.
Best for
Rakiura Track huts and campsites
Two DOC huts (Port William and North Arm) and three campsites along the Rakiura Great Walk. All must be booked, even in winter, and huts have no stoves or food, so carry both.

Things to do
Rakiura is best for wildlife and walking, not beaches or nightlife. Build your stay around one guided bird experience, one walk and a boat trip, and leave a slack day for weather.
Ulva Island birdlife
A short water-taxi ride from Oban, this bird-rich island is popular for guided walks. RealNZ lists a 2.5-hour Ulva Island Explorer from NZ$179, and local water-taxi operators also run trips.

Kiwi spotting at night
DOC lists kiwi among the wildlife visitors can see in the park. RealNZ lists a 4-hour Wild Kiwi Encounters tour from NZ$269, but it does not run in winter and sightings are never guaranteed.
Find tours: Kiwi spotting at night, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)
Rakiura Track
A 37 km Great Walk loop starting near Oban, with huts for overnight stays. Mud above boot height is possible after rain, and huts have no food, stove or lighting.
Village and Bays tour
A 1.5-hour guided drive around Oban and nearby bays, listed from NZ$65, and the simplest orientation for a short stay or a day trip.
Find tours: Village and Bays tour, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)
Rakiura in a Day
RealNZ’s 8-hour day tours include the return ferry and are listed at NZ$449, for travellers who can only spare one day from Bluff.

Seals, penguins and stargazing
The park is home to seals, penguins, weka and other birds, and the island’s visitor site lists stargazing, kayaking and cruises among activities. Pack warm layers for evenings.

Getting there
There are two ways across Foveaux Strait. Stewart Island Flights runs a 20-minute service from Invercargill to Oban, with a summer timetable from 1 October to 30 April and a winter one from 1 May to 30 September. Each passenger gets 15 kg of checked baggage and one small carry-on, and a courtesy van takes bags to the company’s depot in Halfmoon Bay. The island’s visitor site also lists flights from Queenstown and Bluff.
The ferry leaves from Bluff, about 30 km south of Invercargill, and takes around an hour on an express catamaran. The operator’s listing shows a 9.45am departure from Bluff all year, with extra sailings by season, but its timetable dates from 2023 to 2024, so confirm times when you book. Check-in is 30 minutes before departure. Bookings are essential. RealNZ runs a coach between Invercargill and Bluff, and cars are not carried, though parking is available near the terminal. RealNZ listed fares from NZ$139 in October 2026.
To reach Invercargill from home, Air New Zealand lists non-stop flights from Auckland (about two hours) and Christchurch (about one hour 25 minutes). The island’s visitor site says there are direct flights from Wellington, but Air New Zealand’s page lists only Auckland and Christchurch as non-stops, so check the timetable for your dates. Coaches also link Invercargill with Dunedin, Te Anau, Queenstown and Christchurch.
Getting around
Oban is small enough to walk. Footpaths are limited, so use them where they exist, and wear bright clothing or carry a torch after dark. Stewart Island Rentals hires cars, motor scooters and bikes from the Oban Visitor Centre all year, and says a driver’s licence is required for cars and scooters. We could not verify prices, age limits or the rules for visitors on foreign licences, so ask when you book. Water taxis serve Ulva Island and other bays.
For the Rakiura Track, DOC gives the section distances as 5, 8, 13 and 11 km, about 37 km in all, with a further 2 km of road from Fern Gully car park back to Oban. Boat access to North Arm Hut depends on the tides.
Money
Stewart Island uses New Zealand dollars. The island’s promotion association says there are no banks, the ATM it lists is in the Four Square supermarket, and most businesses have EFTPOS and accept major cards, though some take cash only. Bring some cash for small operators.
Costs run above the mainland. The island’s visitor site says power costs about four times as much as on the mainland, and the ferry, tours and flights are the big items. In October 2026 RealNZ listed the Village and Bays tour from NZ$65, Ulva Island Explorer from NZ$179 and Wild Kiwi Encounters from NZ$269. DOC hut fees on the Rakiura Track for New Zealand adults are NZ$44 a night from October to April and NZ$31 from July to September.
Know before you go
New Zealand citizens and residents need no visa or entry paperwork, because Stewart Island is domestic. Book ferries and flights ahead in summer, and book DOC huts and campsites on the Rakiura Track all year. Without a valid booking, DOC says you may be charged a penalty or turned away.
The track needs preparation. DOC warns that after long rain the section between Port William and North Arm huts can have mud above boot height, and that the huts have no gas cooking, lighting or toilet paper, so you must carry a stove, fuel, candles and your own food. Phone coverage is limited to the township, so DOC suggests a distress beacon. Share your plans and sign the hut books.
The Stewart Island Health Centre on Argyle Street is open from 10am to 12.30pm daily, with a doctor on call at other times. Dial 111 in an emergency, or Healthline on 0800 611 116 for non-urgent advice. Dogs are not permitted in the national park. A visitor levy applies to non-residents under a local Act; it has been collected through ferry fares, but we could not verify the current rate.
Mobile coverage is limited for Spark and Vodafone. Free wifi is available at the Halfmoon Bay library and along Elgin Terrace. Power sockets are the standard New Zealand type.

Questions people ask
Do I need a passport or visa for Stewart Island?
No. Stewart Island is part of New Zealand, so there is no border control. You will need a booking for the ferry, flight and any DOC hut or campsite, because the Rakiura Track must be booked all year.
How do I get to Stewart Island from Auckland?
Fly to Invercargill (Air New Zealand lists non-stops from Auckland and Christchurch), then either take Stewart Island Flights on its 20-minute hop to Oban or travel to Bluff for the one-hour ferry. A coach links Invercargill to the Bluff ferry terminal.
How many days do I need on Stewart Island?
RealNZ suggests two to three nights for most visitors, and a day trip is possible. Allow extra slack in your plans because ferries and flights depend on the weather, and add three days if you want to walk the Rakiura Track.
Can I use cards on Stewart Island?
Mostly. The island’s promotion association says there are no banks, the only ATM it lists is in the Four Square supermarket, and most businesses have EFTPOS and take major cards, though some are cash-only. Carry some cash.
Will my phone work on Stewart Island?
Only a little. The island’s visitor site lists limited coverage for Spark and Vodafone, with free wifi at the library and on Elgin Terrace. DOC says coverage on the Rakiura Track is limited to the township, so consider a distress beacon.
When is the best time to visit Stewart Island?
Summer, December to February, is busiest and RealNZ advises booking early. Winter is quieter but some experiences, including Wild Kiwi Encounters, do not run. The weather is changeable all year, so pack for wind and rain whenever you go.
