Using Island
These terms apply when you use island.nz. Island is an independent publication made in Aotearoa New Zealand; “we” and “us” on this page mean Island. By using the site, you agree to these terms. If anything here is unclear, ask us.
General information, not advice
Everything on Island is general information to help you plan an island holiday. It isn’t personal travel, financial, insurance, medical or legal advice, and it doesn’t take your circumstances into account.
For your own situation, such as your health before you travel, your insurance or your visa, talk to a qualified professional or the relevant authority.
Check official sources before you travel
Entry rules, health requirements and safety advice can change quickly. Before you book, and again before you leave, check:
- SafeTravel, the New Zealand Government’s official travel advice for each country, where you can also register your trip
- the entry requirements of every country you’ll visit or pass through, on that government’s official website
- your airline, ferry or tour operator, for schedules and baggage rules
Prices, schedules and rules change
We check every page against primary sources and show the date we last did. Even so, prices, timetables, exchange rates, opening hours and rules change, sometimes the day after we’ve checked.
Exchange rates on Island are indicative. Our climate figures describe typical conditions over many years, not a forecast for your trip. Treat every figure as a guide, and confirm anything that matters before you pay.
Bookings are with the provider
We’re not a travel agent. We don’t sell travel, take payments or make bookings.
When you book through a link on Island, your contract is with the provider, such as the hotel, tour operator, car hire company or booking site, on their terms. Changes, refunds and complaints about a booking go to them. Some of these links can earn us a commission; our disclosure explains how.
Links to other sites
We link to official sources, operators and partners. We don’t control those sites and aren’t responsible for their content, prices or privacy practices.
Our liability
We take care to get things right, but we can’t promise that Island is complete, current or free of errors, or that the site will always be available.
To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for any loss or damage that comes from using Island, from relying on its information, or from anything you book with a provider we link to.
Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, the Fair Trading Act 1986 or any other New Zealand law that can’t be excluded by agreement.
Copyright and credits
The words, design, charts and maps on Island are ours unless they’re credited to someone else. You’re welcome to link to any page, and to quote a short passage with a link back. Please ask before copying whole pages or republishing our data.
Some material belongs to others and is used under their licences: map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, climate data from Meteostat and NASA POWER, sea temperatures from NOAA, cyclone tracks from IBTrACS, ferry timetables from Auckland Transport, exchange rates from the European Central Bank and other central banks, via Frankfurter, and photographs credited where they appear. Their licences, not these terms, govern how you can reuse that material. Our credits page lists every source and licence.
Governing law
These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the courts of New Zealand can hear any dispute about them.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed. If you keep using Island after a change, the updated terms apply.
