The short version

Kawau Island is a roadless island in the Hauraki Gulf, about 20 minutes by water taxi from Sandspit near Warkworth. The draw is history: Sir George Grey’s Mansion House, the remains of a copper mine and walking tracks between them. It suits Auckland-based families, couples and anyone who wants a gentle day on the water.

The catch is the timetable. Boats run to a strict schedule, you need to book ahead, and Mansion House has short and seasonal opening hours. In July and August it opens only for group bookings. It is also not a beach holiday and not a place to eat out, because there is no restaurant scene.

Our verdict: an easy day trip or a quiet one-to-two-night break within reach of Auckland, rather than a destination to fly across the country for.

Who Kawau Island suits

Each score is out of 5, against the other islands we cover.

Best for

  1. Rest: 4 out of 5.No roads, no rubbish collection and a boat timetable; the pace is set by the boat.
  2. Families: 3 out of 5.Short boat ride, easy tracks and free Mansion House entry for children, but no roads and a strict boat timetable.
  3. Couples: 3 out of 5.Lodge and retreat stays, gardens and quiet walks suit a short escape from Auckland.

The catch

The timetableBoats run to a strict schedule you book ahead, Mansion House keeps short seasonal hours, and there is nowhere to eat out.

Show the other nine ratings
  • Culture: 3 out of 5.Mansion House, the 1854 mine engine house, the old mining village sites and the island’s Māori history make a good heritage day out.
  • Nature: 3 out of 5.Weka, peacocks and penguin and dolphin sightings on the mail run, with wallabies and pests still being controlled.
  • Value for money: 3 out of 5.A day trip is cheap, but a stay means boat fares both ways plus Sandspit parking.
  • Honeymoons: 2 out of 5.A boutique lodge and a wellness retreat exist, but this is a modest gulf island rather than a honeymoon destination.
  • Adventure: 2 out of 5.Coppermine walks of about an hour and sea kayaking, but nothing remote or demanding.
  • Beaches: 2 out of 5.Swimming and rockpools at Mansion House Bay, though the island is better known for its history than its sand.
  • Food and wine: 2 out of 5.A yacht club with a pub and shop, and a Mansion House cafe with patchy hours; no restaurant scene.
  • Luxury: 2 out of 5.A boutique lodge resort exists, but there is little else at the top end.
  • Snorkelling and diving: 1 out of 5.Auckland’s tourism body lists snorkelling and Mansion House Bay has rockpools, but we found no sourced sites or operators in this temperate gulf water.

When to go

Kawau is a summer and shoulder-season island, mainly because that is when things are open. Mansion House opens most days from January to March, while from May to June it opens only on weekends, and in July and August only for groups. Auckland’s tourism body says the Mansion House cafe opens daily only in holiday periods, while DOC lists it as an events catering option, so do not count on it. In September and October the house opens on weekends, with weekday hours added after Labour Day.

Weather matters more than on a land trip. Pine trees along the tracks can drop branches or fall in wind, and the boats run in open water. Check the marine forecast before you drive to Sandspit. The coastal route on the Dispute Cove loop is passable only at low tide, so look at the tide table too. This is a temperate island, so there is no cyclone-season planning of the kind a tropical trip needs.

Summer also costs more: Sandspit parking doubles from NZ$6 to NZ$12 a day. The 2027 school holidays run 10 to 26 April, 3 to 18 July and 25 September to 10 October, with the summer break starting by about 18 December and lasting five or six weeks. Schools set exact dates within these ranges. Book boats and bachs early for those weeks.

Where to stay

The honest choice is between staying on the island and treating it as a day trip from the mainland. On the island, Auckland’s tourism body lists a boutique lodge, a retreat and bachs. Which bay each sits in is worth checking in the listing, because there are no roads between them.

On the mainland, not marked here: 4 Sandspit and Warkworth (mainland).

  1. Mansion House Bay

The island’s visitor centre in all but name. Cruises and water taxis call at the Mansion House jetty, and most of the walks start nearby. Auckland’s tourism body lists a boutique lodge, a retreat and bachs; check each listing for its bay.

Things to do

Kawau is best for heritage and easy walking. Plan around Mansion House’s opening hours, add one of the mine walks, and give yourself time for the boat back.

  • Mansion House and gardens

Sir George Grey’s home, built in 1845 and a Category 1 Historic Place. The grounds hold peacocks, weka and wallabies. Entry is NZ$10 for adults, free for children with a paying adult, and card only.

  • Coppermine Track

The old coach road climbs through pines to a lookout over the 1854 engine house, about an hour one way to the mine. The last section is steep and slippery when wet.

  • Dispute Cove loop

A coastal variation on the mine walk, about an hour one way, near the site of one of the island’s old mining villages. The coastal section is passable only at low tide, so check the tide first.

  • Royal Mail Run cruise

A cruise from Sandspit that delivers mail and groceries around the island’s bays, passing more than 75 wharves, according to Auckland’s tourism body. Penguins and dolphins are often seen. It departs daily at 10.30am.

  • Mansion House Cruise

A day trip from Sandspit at 10.30am that takes in Mansion House. Check the opening hours first, because the house is closed to individuals in July and August.

  • Ladys Bay and Momona Point

Short tracks to promontories with mainland views. Ladys Bay is about 15 minutes, though beach access there is closed; Momona Point leads to a former pā site.

  • Swimming, kayaking and fishing

Auckland’s tourism body lists swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing in the Hauraki Gulf. Mansion House beach also has rockpools at low tide.

Getting there

From Auckland, drive about 1.5 hours north to Sandspit Wharf near Warkworth. Ferries and water taxis make the crossing in about 20 minutes. Kawau Cruises says it runs to a strict timetable, asks for at least two hours’ notice when booking, and wants you at the wharf 30 to 45 minutes before departure. Its Royal Mail Run and Mansion House cruises both leave Sandspit at 10.30am daily. We could not find a published timetable or fares in our research, so call the operator or check its site.

From Wellington or Christchurch, fly to Auckland first and add the drive north; we did not research flights for this page. Arriving by private boat from Westhaven Marina takes about an hour, and DOC says boats may only drop off and pick up at the Mansion House jetty.

Luggage is generous on the operator’s terms: two bags per adult and one per child at no charge. Car parking at Sandspit costs NZ$6 a day off-season and NZ$12 in summer.

Getting around

There are no roads on the island, so you walk. DOC’s tracks mostly start near Mansion House. The viewpoint over the bay takes about 15 minutes, the Coppermine Lookout 25 minutes one way, and the mine itself about an hour one way. The Schoolhouse Bay road takes 35 minutes one way and passes private homes. Leave time to finish before your return boat.

You do not need a driving licence or a scooter. The Kawau Island Yacht Club has a shop, a pub and a petrol station, open to non-members, but we did not find any island taxi or bus service. DOC warns that the last stretch to the mine is steep, so this is not an easy island for limited mobility.

Money

Kawau uses New Zealand dollars. Costs are modest if you are day tripping: Mansion House is NZ$10 for adults, with children free when accompanied by a paying adult, and it takes only eftpos or card. The operator also applies a fuel surcharge of NZ$10 per adult and NZ$5 per child return, on top of fares we could not source.

Bring some cash anyway, because we did not confirm which island businesses take cards. There is no rubbish collection on the island, so take everything back to the mainland.

Know before you go

Kawau is part of New Zealand, so there are no entry requirements for NZ passport holders. The rules are DOC’s: no dogs, no fires or portable barbecues except the permanent barbecue at Mansion House, no camping outside designated sites, no rubbish bins and no drones without a permit. The dog rule protects kiwi and weka.

Wallabies are an established pest on the island. DOC says control operations have reduced their numbers, so expect to see more weka and peacocks than wallabies. Pest eradication is under way on the island, and DOC advises checking your gear before leaving the mainland for pest-free gulf islands, which is cheap insurance here too. Kawau is privately owned apart from the reserve, so be courteous when going ashore.

Mind the practical hazards. Wear shoes that grip on the final section of the Coppermine Track, which is slippery when wet. Stay out of the closed Redwood Track and the closed beach at Ladys Bay. Take sun protection and water. The island is part of Māori history too: DOC records that Ngāti Manuhiri and Ngātiwai returned in the 1830s and still live on the island and adjoining coast. Treat the old sites with respect.

Questions people ask

Do I need a passport or permit to visit Kawau Island?

No. Kawau is in New Zealand, so there are no border formalities. You need a boat booking from Sandspit, and DOC rules apply on the reserve: no dogs, no fires or portable barbecues, and no camping outside designated sites.

How do I get to Kawau Island from Auckland?

Drive about 1.5 hours north to Sandspit Wharf near Warkworth, then take a ferry or water taxi, about 20 minutes. Book at least two hours ahead and arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure. The island has no roads, so leave your car at Sandspit.

Is Kawau Island a day trip or an overnight stay?

Both work. DOC describes it as a day-trip destination, and a day covers Mansion House and one walk. Staying overnight in a lodge, retreat or bach gives you the island after the day boats leave, at the cost of two sets of boat fares.

When is Mansion House open?

Hours change by month. From January to March it opens on weekdays 12.30 to 2pm and weekends until 3pm, and from May to June only on weekends. In July and August it opens only for group bookings. Confirm on DOC’s page before you book a boat.

Can I bring my dog to Kawau Island?

No. Dogs are not allowed in the reserve, which DOC says protects kiwi and weka. Plan kennel care before you go.

Do I need cash on Kawau Island?

Not for Mansion House, which takes eftpos or card only. We could not confirm card acceptance at the island’s other businesses, so bring some cash and check with your accommodation and the operators.
