Oʻahu or Viti Levu?
Viti Levu is the easier, cheaper family week: about 3 hours from Auckland, no ESTA and prices close to NZ’s. Oʻahu costs more and takes about 8.5 hours, but adds city sights and history, and it is the stronger NZ-summer pick, scoring 93 in January to Viti Levu’s 51. In July both score in the 90s, so the shorter flight wins.

The real difference
Oʻahu is a city island with a long list of outings, and Viti Levu is a resort island built for an easy week. On Oʻahu, Honolulu and Waikīkī are within reach of Pearl Harbor, ʻIolani Palace, the Lēʻahi (Diamond Head) hike and the North Shore’s surf beaches. The catch is cost and planning: US prices, an ESTA, and sights that run on bookings and closing days. Hanauma Bay, the best-known snorkel spot, shuts on Mondays and Tuesdays, and non-residents are urged to reserve.
Viti Levu wins on ease. Denarau’s nine family-friendly resorts are a 20-minute drive from Nadi airport, and most have kids’ clubs. Its catch is the reef: near Nadi, snorkelling means a boat trip or the Coral Coast, and Fiji’s postcard islands, such as the Mamanucas, are offshore (see Fiji).
If Oʻahu sounds too busy, look at Maui. It means a second flight, about 30 minutes from Honolulu by the tourism board’s timing.
Getting there and around
Air New Zealand flies non-stop from Auckland to Honolulu, averaging 8 hours 30 minutes, and from other NZ airports you connect in Auckland. Viti Levu is about 3 hours from Auckland, and Fiji Airways also flies non-stop from Wellington and Christchurch. From those cities, that means one flight of four hours or less instead of a connection through Auckland.
Honolulu is an hour or two ahead of NZ on the clock but a day behind, so you gain a day going and lose it coming home. Fiji is at most an hour behind NZ. If you want both, Tourism Fiji lists about three Fiji Airways flights a week between Honolulu and Nadi, taking about 6 hours 50 minutes.
Oʻahu drives on the right. You can skip the car if you stay in Waikīkī: Air New Zealand says the airport bus takes about an hour. Viti Levu drives on the left like home, rental firms accept a full NZ licence, and transfers, taxis and tours cover most trips. Uber doesn’t operate in Fiji.
When each is at its best
The NZ summer is what separates them. Oʻahu scores well all year in our data, while Viti Levu is at its best from June to October and weakest from January to March, in its hot, wet cyclone season. In January, Oʻahu scores 93 to Viti Levu’s 51, which makes Hawaiʻi the stronger choice for the summer holidays. Both are wetter from November to April, but Hawaiʻi’s tourism board says most of its rain falls in the mountains and valleys on the windward side.
In the July school holidays both score in the 90s, so the shorter flight and lower prices tip it to Fiji. Neither is storm-free. Hawaiʻi’s hurricane season runs from June to November and peaks in August and September, though our data shows a storm near Oʻahu only about once in six seasons. Near Viti Levu it is about once in two, mostly from December to February and in April. Oʻahu’s winter also sends big swells to north shore beaches, so check with a lifeguard before you swim.
Costs and practicalities
Oʻahu costs more at every step. On 13 October 2026, Air New Zealand’s sample one-way fares from Auckland started at NZ$814 to Honolulu and NZ$351 to Nadi. On the ground, our cost rating puts Oʻahu above NZ prices and Viti Levu at about NZ prices. Extras add up there: businesses may pass on general excise tax and the county surcharge, up to 4.712%, Hanauma Bay charges non-residents US$25, and Pearl Harbor’s grounds are free but parking is US$7 a day.
Neither needs a visa for NZ passport holders. As of October 2026, the US asks for an e-passport and an ESTA approved before you travel, for stays of up to 90 days. Fiji gives a visitor permit on arrival for up to four months.
In Fiji, card payments usually carry a surcharge of about 3%, tipping isn’t expected, and the plugs are the same as NZ’s. SafeTravel’s advice is to exercise increased caution in the US and normal precautions in Fiji, and for both it recommends comprehensive travel insurance.
