The short version

Oʻahu is the Hawaiʻi most New Zealanders picture: Honolulu, Waikīkī and a ring of beaches on the most populated island in the chain. Air New Zealand flies non-stop from Auckland in about 8 hours 30 minutes, and a public bus links the airport to Waikīkī. Pearl Harbor, ʻIolani Palace and the Polynesian Cultural Center give it more to see than a pure beach island.

It suits first-timers, families who want plenty to do, and anyone who wants history and Hawaiian culture alongside the sand. It suits quiet-seekers less well, because this is a big, busy island with a city at its centre.

The catch is cost and planning. Flights start at NZ$814 each way on Air New Zealand’s October listing, you need an approved ESTA before you board, and the best-known sights run on reservations and closing days. Our verdict: a strong first Hawaiian trip for Kiwis who want things to do. Compare it with Maui before you book.

Who Oʻahu suits

Each score is out of 5, against the other islands we cover.

Best for

  1. Families: 4 out of 5.Ko ʻOlina’s four lagoons, free entry to Pearl Harbor’s grounds and one child aged 5 or under riding the bus free per paying adult.
  2. Couples: 4 out of 5.Surf lessons off Waikīkī, lagoon resorts at Ko ʻOlina and humpback whales from November to May, though Waikīkī itself is busy.
  3. Adventure: 4 out of 5.A steep summit hike at Lēʻahi, expert-only North Shore surf in winter and zipline and UTV tours at Kualoa Ranch.

The catch

Cost and planningAir New Zealand fares started at NZ$814 each way when we checked, you need an ESTA before you board, and the big sights run on reservations and closing days.

Show the other nine ratings
  • Beaches: 4 out of 5.Waikīkī Beach, the Ko ʻOlina lagoons and calmer North Shore summers, though winter swells make some beaches unsafe.
  • Culture: 4 out of 5.ʻIolani Palace, Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center, which has a village for Aotearoa.
  • Food and wine: 4 out of 5.Honolulu has Chinatown’s eclectic food scene, Hawaiʻi Regional Cuisine, poke, plate lunches and farmers markets, and Haleʻiwa adds shave ice and food trucks.
  • Luxury: 4 out of 5.Ko ʻOlina has Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu and Aulani, and The Ritz-Carlton Oʻahu, Turtle Bay is a beachfront resort on the North Shore.
  • Honeymoons: 3 out of 5.The Four Seasons at Ko ʻOlina and the beachfront Ritz-Carlton at Turtle Bay give a romantic base, but the island is large and Waikīkī is a busy city beach.
  • Snorkelling and diving: 3 out of 5.Hanauma Bay is the best-known snorkel spot, but it needs a reservation and an education video, and it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Nature: 3 out of 5.A crater hike, windward valleys and winter humpback whales, on the most populated island in Hawaiʻi.
  • Rest: 2 out of 5.Ko ʻOlina and the North Shore are calmer, but Waikīkī and Honolulu are busy and the island is the most populated in the chain.
  • Value for money: 2 out of 5.Air New Zealand one-way fares start at NZ$814, and the ESTA, parking and attraction fees add up quickly.

When to go

Hawaiʻi has two seasons: kau, the drier, hotter half from May to October, and hoʻoilo, the wetter, cooler half from November to April. Rain falls mostly on the mountains and the windward northeast side, and the tourism board says you can often find sun a short distance along the coast. For a holiday, the sea matters more than the weather. Winter storm swells reach the North Shore, where November to February is the time for big-wave watching and the waves are dangerous even for experienced surfers. Summer calms it for swimming. Strong currents can make any beach unsafe in any month, so ask a lifeguard.

Hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking in August and September. Our cyclone chart shows storms passing near Oʻahu are uncommon, but the state’s emergency agency still points to Hurricane Iwa, a Category 1 storm that struck in 1982. And 2026 has not been quiet for the state: the agency lists active emergency proclamations for tropical cyclones in August and September and for the weather events of March and April. The state is also giving grants to Oʻahu small businesses hurt by the March kona low storms. Buy insurance that covers cancellation, and check current conditions before you fly. Humpback whales are around from November to May.

Dates worth knowing: Honolulu Marathon weekend is 12–13 December 2026, and the tourism board lists the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing among the North Shore competitions held in November and December, so check its schedule. NZ’s summer school break starts no later than 19 December, and the 2027 term holidays fall on 10–26 April, 3–18 July and 25 September–10 October. July lands in Hawaiʻi’s drier half, while the summer break lands in the wetter, surfier one. Air New Zealand’s fare calendar for 11 October to 10 November showed one-way fares swinging from NZ$814 to more than NZ$1,600, so price dates before fixing them. May is our pick for balance.

Where to stay

Oʻahu is big enough that your base matters. Waikīkī is the default for first-timers and anyone without a car, Ko ʻOlina on the west coast suits resort stays around its four lagoons, and the North Shore is a longer drive for a surf-town pace.

  1. Waikīkī

Honolulu’s beach district, with surf lessons, shopping and nightlife along the shore. The W Line bus links it to the airport in about an hour, so you can manage without a car. Expect a busy city beach.

Things to do

Oʻahu is best for variety: a royal palace and a wartime memorial, a headline hike, a snorkel morning, a North Shore day and Polynesian culture, all on one island. The catch is logistics. Hanauma Bay is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, ʻIolani Palace opens Tuesday to Saturday, and the Polynesian Cultural Center is shut on Sundays and Wednesdays. Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay all open on Sundays. Lay your week out against those days before you book.

  • Waikīkī Beach and a surf lesson

Waikīkī is the first-timer’s beach, and Honolulu’s coast is where beginners take surf lessons or snorkel in sheltered bays. Check lifeguard flags first: strong currents can make any beach unsafe, especially in winter.

Find tours: Waikīkī Beach and a surf lesson, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Lēʻahi (Diamond Head) summit hike

    A steep trail of 0.8 mile (1.3 km) climbs about 170 m to a 1911 fire-control station. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Non-residents must reserve entry and parking: US$5 each plus US$10 a vehicle. Open 6am to 6pm.

  • Pearl Harbor National Memorial

Museums and grounds are free, the USS Arizona Memorial program is booked on Recreation.gov for a US$1 fee, and bags are not allowed inside. Parking is US$7 a day. Other ticketed sites include the Bowfin and the Battleship Missouri.

Find tours: Pearl Harbor National Memorial, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • ʻIolani Palace

The only official royal residence in the United States, built in 1882 for King Kalākaua. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm, with guided and self-guided audio tours. The ticket office opens at 8.30am.

  • Hanauma Bay snorkelling

A marine conservation district open Wednesday to Sunday, entry 6.45am to 1.30pm. Non-residents pay US$25 plus an online fee, must watch an education video on every visit, and should book ahead. Packages with Waikīkī transport are sold through Roberts Hawaiʻi.

Find tours: Hanauma Bay snorkelling, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • North Shore day trip

About an hour’s drive from Waikīkī: Haleʻiwa for shave ice and food trucks, then Waimea Bay and the Banzai Pipeline beaches. Winter waves can top 30 feet and are dangerous even for experienced surfers; summer is calmer for swimming.

Find tours: North Shore day trip, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Polynesian Cultural Center

In Lāʻie, villages for six Pacific cultures including Aotearoa, plus a lūʻau and the evening show Hā: Breath of Life. It opens at noon and is closed Sundays and Wednesdays outside listed dates. Experiences start at US$49.95.

Find tours: Polynesian Cultural Center, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Whale watching, November to May

Humpback whales winter around Oʻahu, and the season generally runs November to May. Stay at least 100 yards away. The view from the Lēʻahi summit may include passing whales in winter.

Getting there

Air New Zealand flies non-stop from Auckland to Honolulu, and it puts the average flight time at 8 hours 30 minutes. It also sells Honolulu itineraries from Christchurch, Wellington, Dunedin and other NZ airports, which connect through Auckland. Its route page doesn’t say how many flights run each week, so check the timetable for operating days. Hawaiʻi is 22 hours behind NZ standard time, and 23 hours behind during NZ daylight saving.

Air New Zealand calls itself one of only two airlines flying direct from Auckland to Hawaiʻi and does not name the other. AeroRoutes reported in July 2026 that Alaska Airlines had closed reservations on a seasonal Honolulu–Auckland service due to resume on 15 November, so don’t count on a second non-stop option. The airport authority also lists Fiji Airways and Qantas, so it may be worth pricing a one-stop itinerary on either.

From Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, the W Line bus runs to Waikīkī every 10 to 15 minutes until about 7pm, with Air New Zealand putting the trip at about an hour. Taxis queue on the median outside baggage claim. Skyline rail has a station at the airport but doesn’t reach Waikīkī, and the rail authority’s operational-readiness target for the line to Civic Center Station is March 2031.

Getting around

You drive on the right, and a right turn on red is allowed after a full stop unless a sign bans it. Children under 4 must be in a child restraint, and the manual sets booster-seat rules for older children, so ask your rental company about seats. On licences, the state driver manual (2020 edition) says a foreign licence is valid with an International Driving Permit for one year after you enter the US. Rental companies set their own rules, so ask yours whether your NZ licence is enough. The manual says a moped needs a class 1 licence, so ask what your NZ licence covers before hiring one.

TheBus and Skyline share the HOLO card. A cash single on the bus is US$3.25 with exact change and no transfers, while a HOLO 2-hour pass is US$3.00 and daily charges cap at US$7.50. Skyline requires a HOLO card. On TheBus, one child aged 5 or under rides free with each fare-paying rider. The Polynesian Cultural Center runs a shuttle from Waikīkī for an extra fee, and Hanauma Bay sells packages with transport from Ala Moana and Waikīkī. The North Shore is about an hour’s drive from Waikīkī, so a car or a tour is the practical way to do it. Parking is charged at Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay and Pearl Harbor.

Money

Oʻahu uses US dollars, so every price here is in US$ unless stated. Hawaiʻi has no sales tax, but businesses can pass on the general excise tax and county surcharge, up to 4.712% on Oʻahu, so a bill can be higher than the menu or tag. Ask what a hotel’s nightly rate includes and whether any mandatory daily fees are added.

Tipping is expected. Brand USA suggests 15–20% for a sit-down meal and 10% at a buffet, with some restaurants adding a service charge for parties of six or more. Cash still has uses: Hanauma Bay collects parking in cash, though its shop and food counters take cards only. We rate Oʻahu 3 on our 4-point budget scale, partly because of the long-haul flights and attraction fees.

Know before you go

As of October 2026, NZ passport holders can travel under the Visa Waiver Program for up to 90 days, but you need an approved ESTA before boarding. Apply on the official ESTA site; private services don’t speed up approval. The fee is US$40.62 (from 16 October 2026), approval lasts up to two years or until your passport expires, and each child needs their own ESTA. You need an e-passport, and the State Department asks for six months’ validity beyond your departure unless an agreement exempts you. SafeTravel’s advice level for the US is “Exercise increased caution”, and it says most visitors staying over 30 days must register with US authorities.

Take comprehensive travel and medical insurance, as SafeTravel advises, and watch for petty theft in tourist areas. The emergency number is 911. The NZ Consulate-General in Honolulu is on +1 808 675 5555, weekdays 9am to 4pm.

The state health department says dengue isn’t endemic in Hawaiʻi and that its cases were infected elsewhere, but the mosquitoes that carry it are active year-round, so use repellent. Check the department’s water quality advisories before swimming. In the water, keep at least 100 yards from whales, 50 yards from spinner dolphins, 50 feet from monk seals and 10 feet from turtles, and never touch or feed wildlife. Outdoor warning sirens are tested on the first business day of each month. If one sounds at another time, tune to local radio or TV.

Aloha means reciprocal kindness and respect, and the tourism board asks visitors to share responsibility for the places they use. Honour posted signs, especially on the North Shore, and keep to the rules at Ko ʻOlina, where alcohol is banned on the shoreline unless authorised. Pack a travel adapter, and check your roaming plan or buy an eSIM.

Questions people ask

Do New Zealanders need a visa for Hawaiʻi?

No visa, but you need an approved ESTA before you board. As of October 2026, New Zealand is on the US Visa Waiver Program, which allows stays of up to 90 days. You need an e-passport. The ESTA fee is US$40.62 (from 16 October 2026), and approval lasts up to two years or until your passport expires. Border officers still decide admission when you land.

What is the best month to visit Oʻahu?

May is our pick: dry-season weather, calmer North Shore seas, the tail of whale season, and before hurricane season begins. May to October is the drier, hotter half. November to April is wetter, with big North Shore surf and humpback whales (November to May). Hurricane season runs June to November, peaking in August and September.

How long is the flight from Auckland to Honolulu?

Air New Zealand puts the average flight time on its non-stop service at 8 hours 30 minutes. Hawaiʻi is 22 hours behind NZ standard time, and 23 hours behind during NZ daylight saving. From other NZ cities you connect through Auckland.

Can I drive on Oʻahu with my NZ licence?

The 2020 state driver manual says a foreign licence is valid with an International Driving Permit for one year after you enter the US. Rental companies set their own rules, so ask yours before you book whether your NZ licence is enough. You drive on the right, and a right turn on red is allowed after a full stop unless a sign bans it.

Do I need to book Hanauma Bay and Diamond Head in advance?

Yes. Non-residents must reserve Diamond Head entry and parking. Hanauma Bay recommends reservations: admission-only slots open two days ahead, and packages with transport can be booked a month ahead. Hanauma Bay is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The USS Arizona Memorial program at Pearl Harbor is also booked on Recreation.gov.

How much should I tip in Hawaiʻi?

Brand USA suggests 15–20% for a sit-down meal and 10% at a buffet, US$1 a drink or 15–20% of a bar tab, and 10–20% for tour guides. Some restaurants add a gratuity for parties of six or more, so check your bill before adding more.
