Hawaiʻi

Oʻahu, where the Auckland non-stop lands, is the easy first trip. Maui adds a second flight and hire car, for a volcano and quieter coasts.

Both are at their best all year except August and September. Oʻahu is the quickest to reach, direct from Auckland in about 8 hours 30 minutes.

How the islands differ

The choice is city and convenience against space and scenery. Oʻahu is where the non-stop from Auckland lands. It has Honolulu and Waikīkī, Pearl Harbor and ʻIolani Palace, the North Shore’s surf breaks, and the Polynesian Cultural Center at Lāʻie, which includes a village for Aotearoa. You can stay in Waikīkī without a car, because the W Line bus runs there from the airport. The trade-off is crowds: Waikīkī is a city beach.

Maui is the island for big days out with slow days in between. The road up Haleakalā climbs to 3,055 m, the Road to Hāna runs 84 km with more than 600 turns, and South Maui is the island’s sunniest, driest coast. Wailea and Kāʻanapali suit couples and honeymooners better than Waikīkī does.

Our pick for a first trip or a short break is Oʻahu, which saves a flight and has more to do without driving. For a week or more of beaches and scenery, Maui is the better fit. Families can make either work: Oʻahu for the variety, Maui for the beaches of the sunny south coast.

Getting between them

You fly. GoHawaii’s island-hopping guide lists only one ferry, from Maui to Lānaʻi, and none from Oʻahu. Honolulu to Kahului is about 30 minutes in the air by the tourism board’s count, and Southwest quotes 45 to 60 minutes. Hawaiian Airlines runs some 140 inter-island flights a day on its 717s, Alaska Airlines has put 737s on three daily Honolulu–Kahului round trips since 3 October 2026, and Southwest flies the route daily. The smaller airports at Kapalua and Hāna take commuter airlines only.

Allow for the airport, not just the flight. The tourism board says to arrive at least 90 minutes before an inter-island flight, and Alaska and Hawaiian now want bags dropped at least 50 minutes before departure. After about eight and a half hours from Auckland and US border control in Honolulu, flying straight on to Maui makes a long day. Two shapes work: a few nights on Oʻahu first, then Maui; or one night in Honolulu before you fly on.

Combining the two makes sense on a trip of 10 days or more. On a single week, the second island costs half a day or more in transit, so we would pick one.

Before you book

The catch is cost on top of a long flight. Air New Zealand’s lowest one-way fare to Honolulu was NZ$814 in its October 2026 listing, Maui adds an inter-island ticket, and the state’s accommodation tax rose to 11% of the room rate on 1 January 2026.

Choose your season. Hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking in August and September, so take cancellation cover for those months. In winter, storm swells reach the north shores, and humpback whales are around from about November or December to May. NZ’s July school holidays fall in Hawaiʻi’s hotter summer season, and the summer break in its wettest months.

Book the sights that run on reservations as soon as your dates are fixed, and know which island you will be on for each. Haleakalā sunrise needs a Recreation.gov booking, released up to 60 days ahead with a second batch 48 hours before, and with no refunds for weather. Lēʻahi (Diamond Head) requires non-residents to reserve entry and parking. Hanauma Bay’s bookings open two days ahead, walk-in tickets are limited, and it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Hire a car for Maui even if you skip one on Oʻahu. At Kahului Airport, the Maui Bus serves only two routes, each every 90 minutes, with a limit of one medium bag. Lahaina is still recovering from the 2023 wildfires. Visitors are welcome there, and the tourism board asks you to respect signs and restricted areas, and not to photograph fire-affected sites.
