The short version

Maui packs a 3,055 m volcano, long beaches, a rainforest coast road and winter humpback whales into one island. Air New Zealand flies non-stop from Auckland to Honolulu in about 8 hours 30 minutes, and Maui is a further inter-island flight of 30 to 60 minutes.

It suits couples, families and anyone who wants beach days with two or three big outings. South Maui is the sunniest, driest coast, West Maui has the sunsets, and Haleakalā and the Road to Hāna give you days that aren’t about the beach.

The catch is the journey and the planning. Air New Zealand’s route ends in Honolulu, so you connect there, you need an approved ESTA before boarding, and the best-known sights run on reservations. West Maui is also still recovering from the 2023 wildfire. Our verdict: a very good beach-and-scenery holiday for a week or more, but for a short break Oʻahu saves you a flight.

Who Maui suits

Each score is out of 5, against the other islands we cover.

Best for

  1. Families: 4 out of 5.Kīhei’s beaches, the Maui Ocean Center and a sunny south coast suit families, but it is a long haul with a connection in Honolulu.
  2. Couples: 4 out of 5.Kāʻanapali sunsets, upscale dining in Wailea and humpback whales offshore from December to May.
  3. Honeymoons: 4 out of 5.Wailea’s luxury resorts, quieter Kapalua and a Haleakalā sunrise make a romantic base; the journey is long.

  • Value for money: 2 out of 5.Fares start at NZ$814 each way to Honolulu before the inter-island hop, and the state accommodation tax is 11%.

When to go

Hawaiʻi has two seasons: kau, the drier and hotter half from about May to October, and hoʻoilo, the cooler and wetter half from about November to April. The wettest months are November to March, and most rain falls on the windward northeast slopes, which is the Hāna side of Maui. South Maui is the island’s sunniest, driest coast, so a winter stay in Kīhei or Wailea still has plenty of dry days. The tourism board’s picks are April, May, September and October. Our sea-temperature chart shows the ocean a couple of degrees cooler in winter and spring than in late summer.

Hurricane season runs from June to November and peaks in August and September. Our cyclone chart shows storms passing close to Maui are uncommon, and the few on record fell between July and September. Even so, this year is a reminder: Maui’s state parks closed on 25 September as a precaution ahead of Tropical Storm Nolo, and Polipoli was still shut on 8 October. The state’s emergency agency also notes that Hurricane Dora in 2023 stayed more than 700 miles away, yet its stronger trade winds fed the Maui wildfires. Wind and dry spells matter too, so buy cancellation cover and sign up for Maui County alerts.

Humpback whales are in Maui’s waters from December to May, with whale-watching tours busiest from January to early April. The East Maui Taro Festival in Hāna is in April, the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival (2027 dates not yet announced) and Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival are in June, and the Hawaiʻi Food & Wine Festival’s Maui weekend is at Kāʻanapali in October (23–25 October in 2026). NZ’s summer holidays start no later than 19 December, in the wetter half but near the start of whale season. In 2027 the term breaks are 10–26 April, 3–18 July and 25 September–10 October, and the last falls just after the peak hurricane months. Air New Zealand’s fare calendar for October 2026 to September 2027 ran from NZ$814 to NZ$1,904 one way, so price your dates before you commit.

Where to stay

Maui is big enough that driving between coasts eats time, so choose one base and day-trip from it. The Honoapiʻilani Highway links Māʻalaea, Lahaina, Kāʻanapali and Kapalua on the west; South Maui is the sunny, dry side; and Upcountry is cooler. Central Maui has the airport, Wailuku’s historic streets and Kahului’s shops, but it is a stop rather than a beach base.

Things to do

Maui is best for big days rather than lots of small ones. Haleakalā sunrise, ʻĪao Valley and Waiʻānapanapa all need reservations, and Molokini trips need a permitted boat operator.

  • Haleakalā summit at sunrise

The road climbs to 10,023 feet (3,055 m). Entry from 3am to 7am needs a US$1 per-vehicle reservation on Recreation.gov, bookable up to 60 days ahead, plus park entry of US$30 a vehicle. Before dawn it is regularly wet, windy and below freezing.

  • Road to Hāna

A 52-mile (84 km) coast road from Kahului with more than 600 turns and 50 bridges. It takes as few as 3 hours, or a full day with stops. Waiʻānapanapa State Park needs reserved entry and parking, and the ʻOheʻo pools are closed to swimming.

Find tours: Road to Hāna, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Molokini snorkel trip

A crescent-shaped islet about three miles (5 km) off the south-west coast, protected as a marine life conservation district. Taking marine life and feeding fish are banned, and commercial snorkel trips need a state permit, so book with a licensed operator.

Find tours: Molokini snorkel trip, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Whale watching, December to May

Humpbacks winter in Maui’s waters from December to May, with tours busiest from January to early April. You can also look from shore at McGregor Point, Kāʻanapali, Kīhei and Wailea. Boats must stay more than 100 yards away.

Find tours: Whale watching, December to May, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Maui Ocean Center

An aquarium on Māʻalaea Bay with a living reef, a turtle lagoon and a humpback 3D show, open 9am to 5pm. Allow about two hours. Standard admission is US$49.95 for adults and US$39.95 for children aged 4 to 12.

  • ʻĪao Valley State Monument

A lush valley above Wailuku, open 7am to 6pm. Non-residents must reserve entry and parking: US$5 entry and US$10 a vehicle, with children 3 and under free. The tourism board advises checking for maintenance closures.

  • Wailea and Mākena beaches

Wailea’s five crescent beaches and Mākena’s Big Beach are the south coast’s beach days. Lifeguards are not always on duty, and the tourism board warns currents can make any beach unsafe, especially in winter. Mākena’s shore break can be very dangerous.

  • Upcountry farms and Kula

Kula and Makawao have farm tours, a goat dairy and Maui-made wines and spirits. It makes a cooler, slower day beside a Haleakalā morning, and a break from the beach.

Getting there

Air New Zealand flies non-stop from Auckland to Honolulu, taking 8 hours 30 minutes on average, and calls itself one of only two airlines flying direct from Auckland to Hawaiʻi. From other NZ airports you connect through Auckland. Hawaiʻi is 22 hours behind NZ standard time (23 during NZ daylight saving), so a daytime departure can land on the evening before you left, by the local calendar, and the return loses a day.

Maui means a second flight. The tourism board gives Honolulu to Kahului as about 30 minutes; Southwest, which also lists the route, quotes 45 to 60. Hawaiian Airlines runs about 140 daily Neighbor Island flights on its 717s, and since 3 October 2026 Alaska Airlines has put 737s on three Honolulu–Kahului round trips. Mokulele Airlines flies commuter routes that include Kapalua and Hāna. The tourism board advises arriving 90 minutes before an inter-island flight, and Alaska and Hawaiian want bags dropped at least 50 minutes before departure. After 8.5 hours in the air and border control in Honolulu, we would leave a long connection, or stay a night, rather than gamble on a tight one.

Getting around

Hire a car. The Maui Bus serves Kahului Airport on only two routes, each every 90 minutes, with a one-medium-bag luggage limit. That is a poor fit after a long flight. Kahului Airport lists nine rental companies, including Avis, Enterprise and Hertz, plus shuttles, taxis and rideshare pickup zones.

You drive on the right. A right turn on red is allowed after a full stop unless a sign bans it, and children under 4 must be in a child restraint; the manual sets booster rules for older children. On licences, the state’s 2020 driver manual says a foreign licence is valid with an International Driving Permit for one year after you enter the US. Rental companies set their own conditions, so ask yours whether your NZ licence is enough. The manual gives mopeds and motorcycles their own licence classes, so don’t assume a car licence covers a scooter.

Two roads need care. The Haleakalā summit road is winding, the park has no fuel (the last petrol is at Pukalani) and the park puts the drive at about 2.5 hours from Kahului. The Road to Hāna is 52 miles with more than 600 turns and 50 bridges; allow at least 3 hours, and more likely a full day.

Money

Maui uses US dollars, so prices here are in US$ unless marked NZ$. Brand USA suggests tipping 15–20% for a sit-down meal, 10% at a buffet, US$1 a drink or 15–20% of a bar tab, 10–20% for tour guides and US$2–5 a night for hotel housekeeping. Some restaurants add a gratuity for parties of six or more, so check the bill. Kahului Airport has ATMs in the ticket lobby, baggage claim and rotunda.

Tax lifts the price. The state accommodation tax rose from 10.25% to 11% on 1 January 2026, and businesses may pass on general excise tax of up to 4.712% on Maui, so a bill can be well above the tag. State tax guidance counts mandatory resort fees as taxable rent, so ask what a nightly rate includes. We could not source current nightly rates, car hire or meal prices, so check them against your dates.

The fixed costs we could source are modest: Haleakalā park entry is US$30 a vehicle for three days plus a US$1 sunrise reservation, ʻĪao Valley and Waiʻānapanapa charge non-residents US$5 entry and US$10 a vehicle, and Maui Ocean Center is US$49.95 for adults and US$39.95 for children aged 4 to 12.

Know before you go

As of October 2026, New Zealand is on the US Visa Waiver Program. You need an approved ESTA before boarding, an e-passport and the ability to show onward travel, for stays of up to 90 days. The fee is US$40.62 (from 16 October 2026), and approval typically lasts two years or until your passport expires. Each child needs their own ESTA. Apply only on CBP’s official site, because it says third-party services don’t speed up approval. An ESTA doesn’t guarantee entry; officers decide when you land. The State Department asks for a passport valid six months beyond your departure unless a country-specific agreement exempts you, so check yours.

SafeTravel rates the US “exercise increased caution” and advises comprehensive travel and medical insurance. The emergency number is 911. The health department says dengue isn’t endemic in Hawaiʻi, but the mosquito that carries it is widespread, so use repellent. At the Haleakalā summit it is about 17°C cooler than the coast and often wet and windy before dawn, so bring layers.

Lifeguards are not always on duty, so check warnings and ask before you swim. The NOAA sanctuary asks you to keep 10 feet (3 m) from turtles, 50 feet (15 m) from monk seals, 50 yards (45 m) from spinner dolphins and more than 100 yards (90 m) from humpback whales. Sign up for Maui County emergency alerts. The state tests its sirens on the first business day of each month; if one sounds at any other time, tune to local radio or TV.

Treat Lahaina with care. The tourism board says visitors are welcome as businesses reopen, and asks you to follow posted signs, avoid restricted areas and not photograph fire-impacted sites. MauiRecovers.org has the latest updates. The tourism board also encourages visitors to mālama, or give back, to the land and ocean they use.

Outlets run at 110/120 volts, so bring adapter plugs and check whether hair dryers and similar appliances need a voltage converter. One NZ’s Daily Roaming covers the USA including Hawaiʻi for NZ$10 a day on eligible Pay Monthly plans, but you’ll need a VoLTE-capable phone, and other providers differ.

Questions people ask

Do New Zealanders need a visa for Maui?

No visa, but you need an approved ESTA before you board. As of October 2026, New Zealand is on the US Visa Waiver Program, which allows stays of up to 90 days. You need an e-passport and must be able to show onward travel. The ESTA fee is US$40.62 (from 16 October 2026). Every child needs their own ESTA, and border officers still decide admission when you land.

What is the best month to visit Maui?

The tourism board’s picks are April, May, September and October. May to October is the drier, hotter half, and South Maui is the driest coast. November to March is wettest, but humpback whales are in Maui’s waters from December to May. Hurricane season runs June to November and peaks in August and September, so late-season trips need cancellation cover.

How do I get from New Zealand to Maui?

Fly Air New Zealand non-stop from Auckland to Honolulu, about 8 hours 30 minutes, then take an inter-island flight to Kahului. The tourism board says about 30 minutes; Southwest quotes 45 to 60. Hawaiian Airlines flies the route, and Alaska Airlines has run 737s on three round trips since 3 October 2026. From other NZ airports you connect through Auckland. Leave a long connection in Honolulu, or stay a night.

Can I drive on Maui with my NZ licence?

The state’s 2020 driver manual says a foreign licence is valid with an International Driving Permit for one year after you enter the US. Rental companies set their own conditions, so ask yours before you book whether your NZ licence is enough. You drive on the right, and mopeds and motorcycles need their own licence classes.

Do I need to book Haleakalā sunrise in advance?

Yes. From 3am to 7am Hawaiʻi time, summit entry needs a US$1 per-vehicle reservation from Recreation.gov, and none are sold at the entrance. Tickets open up to 60 days ahead, with some released 48 hours before. There are no refunds for weather, you still pay park entry, and it is regularly below freezing before dawn.

Is it appropriate to visit Lahaina and West Maui now?

The tourism board says visitors are welcome in Lahaina as businesses reopen. It asks you to follow signs, stay out of restricted areas and not photograph fire-impacted sites. Kāʻanapali and Kapalua resorts are on the same coast. MauiRecovers.org, which the tourism board points to, has the latest recovery news.
