Fiji

Flights from NZ land on Viti Levu, so the real choice is how far past Nadi you go: a short boat, a long boat or another flight.

All four are at their best from June to October. Viti Levu is the quickest to reach, direct from Auckland in about 3 hours.

How the islands differ

Think of Fiji’s holiday islands as steps away from Nadi airport. Each step past Viti Levu adds travel time and thins out the shops, banks and medical care. Viti Levu is where you land and the easiest option: Denarau, about 20 minutes from the airport, is a cluster of family resorts with kids’ clubs. Near Nadi, though, reef means a drive to the Coral Coast or a boat.

The Mamanuca Islands are that boat. White sand and a calm lagoon are the point, and the larger islands have family, adults-only and luxury resorts. The trade-off: you buy a resort, not an island, so you mostly eat where you stay and need another boat to go anywhere else.

The Yasawa Islands carry on north, 50 to 80 kilometres from Nadi. Stays are simpler, manta rays glide past some resorts from May to October, and a hop-on pass makes it easy to split a week. But the boat to the far end takes about four and a half hours, and meals are a compulsory resort plan.

Taveuni sits the other way, in the north-east, and needs a domestic flight. It is the island for doing things: Rainbow Reef diving, rainforest hikes and waterfalls, with few places to eat outside the resorts.

Our rule of thumb: toddlers and first-timers on Viti Levu or at a Mamanuca family resort, couples on an adults-only Mamanuca island or in the Yasawas, divers and hikers on Taveuni. The island finder weighs them against the rest of the Pacific.

Getting between them

Port Denarau, a short drive from Nadi airport, is the gateway to both western chains. South Sea Cruises sails to both every day, to some resorts several times, and water taxis go on demand.

The Mamanucas are the short hop: Tourism Fiji’s listings give 50 minutes to Malolo Lailai and about an hour to Matamanoa, near the north end. The Yasawa Flyer leaves Port Denarau at 8.45am each morning, calls at South Sea Island in the Mamanucas and reaches the Blue Lagoon at about 1.15pm. It returns the same way each afternoon, linking Yasawa resorts too.

Taveuni is a separate journey: a domestic flight of 1 to 1.5 hours from Nadi. Tourism Fiji lists daily Fiji Link flights; Northern Air also flies from Nadi and Nausori, near Suva. Pairing Taveuni with a western chain means flying back to Nadi first.

Combine in moderation. Tourism Fiji advises one region, two at most, because ferries, flights, tides and weather stretch plans. Viti Levu plus one chain is the easy pairing, and for the Yasawas often a necessity: unless you land very early, the operator advises a night in Nadi or Denarau before the morning Flyer. The two western chains also combine well; finish in the Mamanucas for an earlier boat back. We would only add Taveuni to a western-island stay on a trip of ten days or more.

Before you book

Leave slack around boat days. November to April is cyclone season, and sea conditions can stop boats on booked dates. In April 2026, Tropical Cyclone Vaianu halted day trips in both chains and cut back resort transfers until normal service resumed on 10 April. Spend your last night on Viti Levu, and buy insurance that covers delays.

Get cash and medicines in Nadi. There are no banks or medical facilities in the Yasawas, Taveuni has no pharmacies, and its bank and ATM are in Naqara. Families with toddlers may prefer to stay closer in.

Count meals as part of the room price. Yasawa resorts charge a compulsory meal plan, other island resorts may ask you to buy one, and many Taveuni lodges offer one because there is little else to eat.

The cooler, drier months are peak season and school-holiday time, so book small island resorts early for July, or see when to go for quieter months.
