Viti Levu or Rarotonga?
Pick Rarotonga for the simplest week: NZ dollars, a 45-minute coast road and the better conditions from December to April. Pick Viti Levu if you fly from Wellington or Christchurch, want a big family resort near the airport, or travel from July to October, when it scores higher. Scale decides it: Rarotonga is one small island, and Viti Levu is a base for day trips and boats.

| The catch | The reef is a boat ride away. Nadi Bay and Denarau are built around pools, marinas and kids’ clubs, so snorkelling a reef means a boat trip or the Coral Coast. | Prices like home. The tourism board says eating out costs about the same as in New Zealand. Sundays are slow, and an NZ car licence does not cover a scooter. |

The real difference
Scale decides this one. Rarotonga is 32 km around and takes about 45 minutes to drive, so the lagoon, the shops and dinner are never far from your bed. Viti Levu is Fiji’s main island and where most Fijian trips start, but its resort areas are spread out: Denarau is a 20-minute drive from Nadi airport, and the Coral Coast is 30 minutes to two hours away.
That shapes each island’s catch. On Viti Levu, Denarau and Nadi Bay are built around pools, marinas and kids’ clubs, so a reef means a boat trip or the drive to the Coral Coast, which Tourism Fiji singles out for snorkelling straight off the beach. On Rarotonga the lagoon is easy, but the tourism board says eating out costs about the same as at home.
Viti Levu’s other card lies offshore: Port Denarau is the gateway to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands, so the white-sand-and-coral day that the Nadi coast can’t give you is a boat ride away. Our Fiji page covers those islands.
Getting there and around
Viti Levu is the shorter flight from all three main cities, and the gap is widest from Wellington. Air New Zealand flies non-stop to both from Auckland, and Tourism Fiji lists Fiji Airways flights to Nadi direct from Wellington and Christchurch too. Rarotonga’s non-stop flights leave from Auckland, and from Christchurch only from June to October, so from Wellington you are looking at about 6 hours 30 minutes via Auckland instead of about 3 hours 45 minutes direct to Nadi.
Mind the date line. Rarotonga is a day behind New Zealand, and the tourism board says booking your first night a day too late is a common mistake. Viti Levu is never more than an hour behind NZ.
On the ground, Rarotonga is simpler. Buses circle the coast road in both directions, and a full NZ licence covers a hire car; for a scooter, the tourism board lists a NZ$20 visitor licence from the police, plus tests if your licence has no motorcycle class. On Viti Levu, resort shuttles, taxis, local buses and tours cover most trips, and Uber doesn’t operate in Fiji. As of October 2026, Tourism Fiji says an English-language licence, such as your NZ one, and a credit card are enough to hire a car.
When each is at its best
Viti Levu has the higher peak; Rarotonga has the steadier year. From July to October, Viti Levu’s conditions score higher every month, and its sea is warmer, at about 26 °C in August when Rarotonga’s has cooled to 24 °C. That makes Viti Levu the stronger pick for the July school holidays (3–18 July in 2027), though Tourism Fiji says June to August is its busiest stretch, so book early.
From December to April it flips. Rarotonga scores higher every month, and its wet season is gentler: January brings about 210 mm of rain there against about 370 mm on Viti Levu. Air New Zealand says its Rarotonga fares are usually cheapest from December to March, which makes Rarotonga the better January escape. Both sit in the November to April cyclone season, with the same storm record, so buy insurance when you book.
Costs and practicalities
Both sit in the same cost tier, about NZ prices, but you pay differently. Rarotonga runs on NZ dollars. Fiji uses its own dollar, cards usually attract a 3% surcharge, and taxis and small shops want cash, so use an ATM at Nadi airport or Denarau.
Eating out is where they part. Tourism Fiji puts a hearty meal at a local restaurant at FJ$10–20 (October 2026), and Nadi’s beds run from backpacker hostels to luxury resorts. On Rarotonga, the markets have cheap places to eat and supermarkets stock familiar brands, which helps if you self-cater. Both use the same three-pin plugs as NZ.
Sundays are quiet on both. Rarotonga’s bus runs clockwise only, with no evening service. On Viti Levu, resorts and tours keep running, but many shops, banks and restaurants close or cut their hours. If neither island quite fits, the island finder ranks the rest.
