The short version

Rarotonga is the easiest tropical island holiday from New Zealand. Air New Zealand flies non-stop from Auckland every day in just under four hours, the money is NZ dollars, the plugs are the same as at home, and an NZ passport gets you 90 days on arrival. The island is small: one coast road runs 32 km around it, and the bus goes either clockwise or anti-clockwise.

It suits families and first-time Pacific travellers best. Muri’s lagoon is shallow and reef-sheltered, the larger resorts run kids clubs, and nothing is more than a short drive away. Couples after something more romantic can add a few nights on Aitutaki, a 50-minute flight away.

The catch is price. The tourism board itself says eating out costs about the same as at home, so this is not a cheap holiday, just an easy one. Sundays are slow, the reef passages need caution, and an NZ car licence does not cover a scooter. Our verdict: the low-stress tropical week, especially with children.

Who Rarotonga suits

Each score is out of 5, against the other islands we cover.

Best for

  1. Families: 5 out of 5.Shallow lagoon at Muri, kids clubs at the larger resorts, a sub-four-hour flight and no currency to change.
  2. Couples: 4 out of 5.Sunset-side stays on the west coast, island nights and easy coast-road days, with Aitutaki a 50-minute flight away.
  3. Beaches: 4 out of 5.Reef-sheltered lagoon beaches around the island, though swimming conditions change near the reef passages.

The catch

Prices like homeThe tourism board says eating out costs about the same as in New Zealand. Sundays are slow, and an NZ car licence does not cover a scooter.

Show the other nine ratings
  • Culture: 4 out of 5.Sunday hymn singing, island nights, the Saturday market and Te Maeva Nui in early August.
  • Rest: 4 out of 5.One slow coast road, 50 km/h limits and a reduced Sunday bus service make it easy to switch off.
  • Honeymoons: 3 out of 5.Comfortable and easy, and Aitutaki is only 50 minutes away by air if you want to add a second island.
  • Adventure: 3 out of 5.A rugged guided Cross-Island trek, scuba diving and May–October kitesurfing; the island is only 32 km around.
  • Snorkelling and diving: 3 out of 5.Easy beginner snorkelling at Muri and the Aroa Lagoonarium, plus scuba and sea-scooter tours; reef passages need care.
  • Food and wine: 3 out of 5.Over 100 cafés and restaurants plus Muri night markets, but food is a bonus rather than the reason to go.
  • Nature: 3 out of 5.A jungle-clad mountain interior and humpback whales offshore from July to October.
  • Value for money: 3 out of 5.Short flights and NZ dollars help, but eating out costs about the same as at home.
  • Luxury: 3 out of 5.The Pacific Resort group, including Te Manava Luxury Villas, runs 4.5- and 5-star boutique resorts, and Crown Beach has villas and a spa on the sunset coast.

When to go

Rarotonga is warm all year, so the real choice is dry and busy or wet and cheaper. April to November is the drier stretch. December to March is hotter and more humid, with rain that usually arrives as short tropical showers rather than days of grey. Air New Zealand says fares are typically cheapest in that December to March wet season, which falls inside the November to April cyclone season. If you book then, buy insurance early and follow local advice if a cyclone forms.

The tourism board’s own pick is the shoulder months of April, May, September and October, for warm days and mostly dry skies. Humpback whales pass from July to October, and May to October brings the steady trade winds kitesurfers want. Te Maeva Nui, the week-long national celebration of culture and self-government, runs in early August around 4 August. The Round Rarotonga Road Race is in September and the Vaka Eiva outrigger canoe festival is in November.

June to October is peak season, when Air New Zealand runs up to three Auckland flights a day. NZ school holidays add pressure: the summer break runs from mid-December until late January or early February, and in 2027 the term holidays fall on 10–26 April, 3–18 July and 25 September–10 October. Book flights and family rooms early for those weeks.

Where to stay

You can’t really pick the wrong side, because the whole island is a 45-minute drive around. Choose by mood: Muri for the lagoon and restaurants, the west coast for sunsets, the south for quiet self-catering, and Avarua only if you want town at the door.

Things to do

Rarotonga is best for easy water days, a real dose of Cook Islands culture and one hard walk. Build the week around a lagoon cruise, the Saturday market, a Sunday service and an island night, then decide whether Aitutaki is worth the extra money.

  • Muri Lagoon cruise

Glass-bottom boats leave from Muri, stop to snorkel the shallow lagoon, then serve a fish barbecue lunch on a small island. Captain Tama’s has run it since 1992, from NZ$115, departing 11am Sunday to Friday.

Find tours: Muri Lagoon cruise, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Cross-Island track

The island’s classic hike climbs through the jungle-covered interior. The track is rugged and the tourism board recommends a guide, especially first time; Maunga Tours runs guided treks with pick-up.

Find tours: Cross-Island track, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Punanga Nui Market

Avarua’s Saturday-morning market runs until midday. Go early for fruit, vegetables and home baking, then stay for music and dance on the main stage from about 10am.

  • An island night

Resorts and cultural villages stage evenings of drumming, dance and a buffet, some with food from an umu (earth oven). Te Vara Nui’s show is performed on stages over water.

Find tours: An island night, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Sunday church service

Cook Islands Christian Church services start at 10am and visitors are welcome to hear the a cappella hymns. Men wear shirts and long trousers; women wear longer skirts or dresses, ideally with covered shoulders.

  • Aitutaki day trip

Air Rarotonga’s day tour flies out at 8am for a six-hour lagoon cruise with snorkelling and lunch, back by early evening. It is NZ$749 per adult before a fuel surcharge; a night or two there costs more but is less rushed.

Find tours: Aitutaki day trip, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Whale watching

Humpback whales visit from July to October and can often be seen from the shore, with the west side the best bet. Local operators also run boat trips in season, and sightings are never guaranteed.

Find tours: Whale watching, on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab)

  • Muri night markets

Food trucks and stalls in Muri Beach village from 5pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday: barbecue, seafood, curries and drinking coconuts. Go early for the widest choice, and bring cash because stalls take cash only.

Getting there

Air New Zealand flies non-stop from Auckland daily in just under four hours. It also runs a seasonal non-stop from Christchurch over the NZ winter, from June to October and taking 4 hours 40 minutes; the tourism board lists up to three flights a week in 2026, so check the 2027 schedule. The tourism board also lists Jetstar flights from Auckland on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, so check Jetstar’s timetable. Air New Zealand lists non-stops only from Auckland and Christchurch, so from Wellington plan on a connection.

Rarotonga runs on GMT-10, on the other side of the date line, so you can land on an earlier calendar date than you left. The tourism board says booking your first night a day too late is a common mistake, so check your dates twice.

At the airport, have your passport, arrival card, return booking and accommodation details ready. Arrivals has car hire desks, an ATM and a Vodafone shop. Taxis meet scheduled international flights, and the airport authority lists fixed Cook Islands Taxi Association fares of NZ$15–40 for airport transfers. The public bus also stops at the airport, with a NZ$2 charge for each large bag.

For Aitutaki, Air Rarotonga flies several times a day, about 50 minutes each way. Air Rarotonga says its check-in is a two- to three-minute walk from international arrivals.

Getting around

One coast road circles the island, there are no traffic lights, and you drive on the left. The speed limit is 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h in Avarua, at Muri Beach and in school zones. Expect a slow loop, not a commute.

The public bus is the simplest option. Clockwise buses leave Cooks’ Corner in Avarua on the hour from 7am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday; anti-clockwise buses run from 8.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays and until 1.30pm on Saturday. Wave from a safe spot on the main road and pay the driver: NZ$5 a ride, or NZ$20 for a day pass. On Sundays only the clockwise bus runs, with a lunchtime gap and no evening service.

A full NZ car licence lets you drive a car for up to six months if you’re 16 or older. Scooters are the catch. You need a motorcycle class on your NZ licence, and the tourism board says you still pay NZ$20 for a Cook Islands visitor licence at the police station in Avarua. Without a motorcycle class you also sit a theory test and a riding test on a scooter you supply. The tourism board’s pages differ on how long the licence lasts, so confirm at the station. A restricted NZ licence isn’t accepted for driving. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on Rarotonga, with a NZ$250 fine. SafeTravel warns that drink driving is more common than in NZ, so take care walking or cycling after dark.

Taxis charge about NZ$3 a kilometre. The roads are flat, many hotels lend bicycles, and e-bikes can be hired. If you need a child car seat, book it with the rental company before you arrive or bring your own.

Money

Rarotonga uses the New Zealand dollar, alongside local coins and notes that collectors seek out but aren’t legal tender outside the Cook Islands. Bring your usual cards: EFTPOS works at most hotels and stores, and ATMs around the island take Visa and Mastercard and pay out NZ dollars. Expect a withdrawal fee of about NZ$5 on an overseas card, so take out larger amounts less often.

Keep cash for the bus and the Muri night markets, where stalls are cash only. The banks are in Avarua and open from 9am to 3pm on weekdays.

Budget roughly as you would for a holiday at home. The tourism board says eating out costs about the same as in NZ, and supermarkets stock familiar brands. Activities are the big extras: a Muri lagoon cruise with lunch starts at NZ$115, island-night shows with a buffet cost NZ$79–155 per adult on the tourism board’s 2025 listing, and the Aitutaki day tour is NZ$749 per adult before its fuel surcharge.

Know before you go

As of October 2026, NZ passport holders get a free 90-day visitor permit on arrival. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the day you leave the Cook Islands. Immigration can ask for your onward ticket, your accommodation’s name and local contact, and proof you can fund your stay. All visitors must declare any criminal conviction, and the ministry says to apply for an exemption before booking. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration before you travel.

Health risks are modest but real. Te Marae Ora, the Ministry of Health, declared the Cook Islands dengue-free on 25 May 2026, ending an outbreak that began in May 2025 and reached 1,251 cases. The mosquitoes that carry dengue bite during the day, so use repellent and choose rooms with screens. Boil tap water or use the filtered refill stations. Visitors pay their own medical costs, including evacuation to NZ if specialist care is needed, so take insurance that covers it, as SafeTravel also advises. The emergency number is 999.

Inside the reef the lagoon is sheltered, but the passages out to the open ocean are not. Ask locally before snorkelling or kayaking near them, and heed signs about tides and currents. On the Cross-Island track, go with a guide or tell someone your plans.

Sunday is church day. Visitors are welcome at Cook Islands Christian Church services, which start at 10am. Dress modestly in town, in villages and at church, and save swimwear for the beach; topless or nude sunbathing causes offence. The official languages are Cook Islands Māori and English, and the greeting is “Kia orana”.

Plugs are the same three-pin type as NZ, at 240 volts. Vodafone Cook Islands is the mobile network. Buy a Travel SIM at the airport or a Travel eSIM online, and bring photo ID to register it; check your NZ provider’s roaming rates first. Leave fruit and vegetables at home, because they aren’t allowed in, and declare any other food on your arrival card.

Questions people ask

Do New Zealanders need a visa for Rarotonga?

No. As of October 2026, NZ passport holders get a free 90-day visitor permit on arrival. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond your departure date, and immigration can ask for your return ticket, accommodation details and proof you can fund your stay. If you have a criminal conviction, the ministry says to apply for an exemption before you book.

What is the best month to go to Rarotonga?

April, May, September and October, which the tourism board calls the shoulder months, balance warmth with dry skies. June to October is peak season and busier, with whales from July. December to March is hotter, wetter and usually cheapest to fly, but it sits in the November to April cyclone season.

Can I ride a scooter in Rarotonga on my NZ licence?

Only with a motorcycle class on it, and the tourism board says you still pay NZ$20 for a Cook Islands visitor licence at Avarua police station. With a car licence alone you also sit a theory test and a riding test on a scooter you supply. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, with a NZ$250 fine.

Is Rarotonga good for young kids?

Yes. Muri’s lagoon is shallow and clear, several larger resorts run kids clubs, and the flight from Auckland is under four hours. Book child car seats ahead, boil tap water, and use insect repellent during the day.

Do I need cash in Rarotonga?

Some. Rarotonga uses NZ dollars, EFTPOS works at most hotels and stores, and ATMs take Visa and Mastercard, with a fee of about NZ$5 a withdrawal on overseas cards. Keep cash for the bus and the Muri night markets, where payment is cash only.

Is a day trip to Aitutaki worth it?

It’s the simplest way to see Aitutaki’s lagoon without staying overnight. Air Rarotonga’s day tour leaves at 8am and includes flights, a six-hour lagoon cruise and lunch, for NZ$749 per adult in October 2026, before any fuel surcharge shown when you book. If your budget stretches, two or three nights there costs more but is far less rushed.
