Cook Islands

Rarotonga is the easy, cheaper base and Aitutaki the lagoon worth an extra flight. Couples should split the week; families can day-trip.

Both are at their best from June to November. Rarotonga is the quickest to reach, direct from Auckland in about 4 hours.

How the islands differ

Start with Rarotonga, then decide whether Aitutaki earns the extra flight. Rarotonga is the hub, and every flight from New Zealand lands there. It has over 100 cafés and restaurants, the Saturday market, island nights and the rugged Cross-Island track, all within easy reach of one 32 km coast road. It is the easier island for first-timers, and the cheaper of the two to reach.

Aitutaki, 220 km to the north, is the lagoon. A triangular reef holds a wide, shallow lagoon scattered with small motu (islets), and most days revolve around a boat, a snorkel and very little else. On land there is a short climb up Maungapu, a Sunday service in Arutanga, an island night and not much more. It is the stronger pick for couples and honeymooners, with adults-only villas and what the tourism board lists as the Cook Islands’ only overwater bungalows.

The gap is widest with children: Muri’s lagoon on Rarotonga is shallow, the larger resorts run kids clubs and a bus circles the island. Aitutaki has no public transport, and three of its best-known resorts set age limits, from 12 and over to adults only. Our pick for families: Rarotonga, with Aitutaki as a day trip if the budget stretches. Couples should split the week and give Aitutaki three or four nights, or two if that is all they can spare.

Getting between them

You fly. Air Rarotonga runs up to five flights a day from Rarotonga to Aitutaki on Saab 340 turboprops, taking roughly 40 to 50 minutes. The tourism board says many departures are timed to meet international arrivals, and Air Rarotonga’s check-in is a two- to three-minute walk from arrivals.

Book the whole journey on one Air New Zealand ticket if you can. Air Rarotonga’s Aitutaki flights are codeshared with Air New Zealand, and codeshare passengers who miss a connection are rebooked at no extra charge. On separate tickets, Air Rarotonga suggests at least 90 minutes after an international arrival and 120 minutes before an international departure, and is not liable for a missed flight if you allow less. Either way, spend your last night on Rarotonga so a late domestic flight cannot cost you the flight home.

For a taste rather than a stay, the Aitutaki Day Tour leaves Rarotonga at 8am and returns at 5.30pm (6pm from April to September), with a six-hour lagoon cruise and lunch in between. It runs Monday to Saturday and costs NZ$749 an adult before any fuel surcharge (October 2026). It is a long, expensive day, but it saves a second set of rooms.

Before you book

The catch is cost. The second island adds a flight and a connection: in October 2026 searches, Air New Zealand’s one-way fares from Auckland started at NZ$586 to Aitutaki against NZ$341 to Rarotonga. Check baggage too: Air Rarotonga’s Seat Only fares include no checked bag.

Book rooms before flights. Aitutaki’s main resorts have only eight to 33 units, so for NZ school holidays, secure rooms first and book flights around them.

Choose your season with the lagoon in mind. The drier months suit boat days best. The wetter months are when Air New Zealand says fares are typically lowest, but they largely overlap the November to April cyclone season, and lagoon operators change or cancel trips in unsafe weather. Leave a spare day on Aitutaki either way.

Plan around Sunday, a day of rest and worship. On Aitutaki most shops close, and the Day Tour and some lagoon operators do not run, so don’t save your one lagoon day for it. On Rarotonga the bus runs a reduced Sunday service. Check your dates twice, too: the tourism board says booking the first night a day too late is a common mistake, because the Cooks sit across the date line from New Zealand.
