Oʻahu or Maui?
Choose Oʻahu for a first Hawaiʻi trip, a week or less, or a holiday without a hire car: it is the island Air New Zealand flies to non-stop. Choose Maui for a beach-and-scenery week built around a car, Haleakalā and quieter resort coasts. The deciding difference is the extra flight from Honolulu, and the car you need when you land.

Choose Oʻahu if
- You want the non-stop flight from Auckland and no second plane on arrival day
- You would rather not drive: the W Line bus runs from the airport to Waikīkī
- You want history as well as beaches, with Pearl Harbor and ʻIolani Palace
Choose Maui if
- You want to watch sunrise from Haleakalā’s 3,055 m summit, booked ahead
- You are happy to hire a car, which Maui all but requires
- You want a resort base such as Wailea, on Maui’s sunniest, driest coast
- You have a week or more, so a Honolulu connection costs a smaller share of it

The real difference
Oʻahu is the Hawaiʻi you reach on one flight. Air New Zealand flies non-stop from Auckland to Honolulu in about 8 hours 30 minutes, a bus runs from the airport to Waikīkī, and Honolulu adds Pearl Harbor and ʻIolani Palace to the beaches. It is the busier island, home to the state capital.
Maui needs one more flight, and it pays you back in scenery: the 3,055 m summit of Haleakalā, the Road to Hāna and resort coasts such as Wailea and Kāʻanapali. The table puts Maui at about 10 hours 30 minutes from Auckland, two hours more than Oʻahu.
Both mean an ESTA and US dollars, and both sit in the same cost tier, so the choice comes down to time and whether you want to drive.
Getting there and around
Air New Zealand’s route ends in Honolulu, so Maui means a connection. The tourism board puts Honolulu to Kahului at about 30 minutes in the air and advises arriving at least 90 minutes before an inter-island flight. Hawaiian Airlines runs some 140 inter-island flights a day, and since 3 October 2026 Alaska Airlines has put 737s on three Honolulu–Kahului round trips. Both airlines now want inter-island passengers checked in, with bags dropped, at least 50 minutes before departure. After a long-haul flight and US border control, leave a generous gap or stay a night.
To combine the two, go to Oʻahu first: land, sleep in Waikīkī, and fly to Maui once you have rested. You come back through Honolulu for the flight home either way, so on the last day either leave a long connection or spend a final night on Oʻahu.
On the ground the islands differ more. Around Waikīkī you can manage without a car, because the W Line bus runs from the airport every 10 to 15 minutes, or every 30 minutes after 7pm. On Maui, the bus serves Kahului Airport on only two routes, each every 90 minutes, with room for one medium bag, so hire a car.
When each is at its best
Both are good almost all year, and the table shows little rain on either. The difference is the late-summer dip: Oʻahu’s only weaker month is September, while Maui’s covers August and September. Hurricane season runs from June to November and peaks in August and September, and although storms near either island are uncommon, buy cancellation cover for a trip then.
Winter brings the humpbacks. NOAA’s whale sanctuary generally counts the season as November to May, and the tourism board says Maui’s tours are busiest from January to early April. Kiwis heading north in the July school holidays miss the whales but land close to the driest time of year: the table puts the driest month on both islands in June.
Book ahead whichever you choose. On Oʻahu, Hanauma Bay is closed every Monday and Tuesday and non-residents are urged to reserve. On Maui, a sunrise reservation for Haleakalā, covering entry from 3am to 7am, is sold only on Recreation.gov, up to 60 days ahead, and never at the gate. The summit before dawn is regularly wet, windy and below freezing, so pack layers.
Costs and practicalities
Neither is cheap. Both sit above NZ prices, and Air New Zealand’s one-way fares to Honolulu started at NZ$814 when checked in October 2026, before any ticket on to Maui. As of October 2026, you need an approved ESTA before you board for either island, for stays of up to 90 days.
The table rates them the same, but Maui adds two costs Oʻahu doesn’t force on you: an extra flight each way and a hire car for the whole stay. On Oʻahu a car is optional, though sights such as Hanauma Bay charge non-residents for entry and parking.
West Maui is still recovering from the 2023 wildfires. The tourism board says many Lahaina businesses have reopened, and asks you to respect posted signs, stay out of restricted areas and not photograph fire-affected sites. Our Hawaiʻi overview covers the other islands.
