Viti Levu or Bali?
Viti Levu is the easier family resort week: about 3 hours from Auckland, non-stop from Wellington and Christchurch too, with no visa to buy. Bali suits couples and adventurous families who want temples, food and surf, and we rate it cheaper on the ground, but the flight is about 9.5 hours. Flight time is the deciding difference.

- You are flying from Wellington or Christchurch and want a non-stop flight
- You have young children and want a resort kids’ club 20 minutes from the airport
- You want no visa to buy and plugs that fit your NZ chargers
Choose Bali if
- You want temples, rice terraces and surf to explore, not just a resort pool
- You are going in April, when Bali scores 82 to Viti Levu’s 69
- You must travel between November and March and would rather risk rain than cyclones

The real difference
Viti Levu is a short-haul resort holiday, and Bali is a long-haul culture trip. Nadi is about three hours from Auckland, and Denarau’s nine family-friendly resorts are a 20-minute drive from the airport. Bali is about 9.5 hours away, and its pull lies outside the hotel gate: temples, rice terraces, surf and ceremonies.
That splits the audience. With small children, the short flight and kids’ clubs of Viti Levu are hard to beat. Couples and adventurous families get more from Bali, if they can face the flight and the traffic.
Neither is a pure beach holiday. Nadi Bay and Denarau are built around pools and marinas, so reef snorkelling means a boat trip or the Coral Coast, where the reef starts just off the beach. Fiji’s postcard sand and coral are offshore, in groups such as the Mamanucas, a boat ride from Port Denarau (see Fiji). In Bali, Seminyak’s waves suit surfers, while Sanur is known for calm water.
Getting there and around
Fiji wins on access. Fiji Airways flies non-stop to Nadi from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and Air New Zealand flies daily from Auckland. Fiji is never more than an hour behind NZ.
Air New Zealand’s non-stop to Bali is seasonal and runs from Auckland only. All year, it also sells connections via Singapore or Australia with partner airlines, and from Wellington or Christchurch you change planes, usually in Auckland. Bali runs four or five hours behind NZ, depending on the time of year.
Both drive on the left. On Viti Levu, transfers, taxis and tours cover most trips (Uber doesn’t operate), and rental firms accept a full NZ licence. Bali’s roads can be heavily congested at peak times and ceremonial processions often fill the road, so most visitors use taxis or a car with a driver. Scooters are the trap: an NZ car licence does not clearly cover one, and SafeTravel warns that if you crash without a motorcycle licence, your travel insurance may be void.
When each is at its best
Both are best in the NZ winter. Tourism Fiji gives May to October as the dry season, and Indonesia’s tourism ministry gives Bali’s as April to October. Both are busy then: Tourism Fiji says its peak coincides with school holidays, and Air New Zealand calls August Bali’s high season. Book early for July.
They split over the NZ summer. From November to April, Viti Levu is in its hot, wet cyclone season, and our storm data puts a cyclone within 200 km of the island about one season in two. Bali’s wet season runs from November to March, but the same data records none within 200 km of Bali in 30 seasons, so the risk there is rain rather than storms.
Bali also scores higher from January to May. In April it scores 82 to Viti Levu’s 69, which makes it the better pick for the April school holidays. Check the date of Nyepi, the Balinese new year, first: it falls around March or April, the airport closes for 24 hours and tourists are asked to stay in their hotels.
Costs and practicalities
The flight is where Fiji saves money. On 13 October 2026, Air New Zealand’s sample one-way fares from Auckland started at NZ$351 to Nadi and NZ$889 to Bali. On the ground the order flips: our cost rating puts Bali below NZ prices and Viti Levu at about NZ prices, so the longer you stay, the more Bali claws back.
Entry is simpler in Fiji. As of October 2026, NZ passport holders are visa-exempt there and get a visitor permit on arrival for up to four months. For Bali, Indonesia charges IDR 500,000 for a 30-day visa, and Bali adds a one-off tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person, which its government recommends paying through Love Bali before you fly.
Fiji’s plugs are the same Type I as NZ’s, while Indonesia uses types C and F, so pack an adaptor. In Fiji, card payments usually carry a surcharge of about 3%. SafeTravel’s advice for Fiji is to exercise normal safety and security precautions, and for Indonesia to exercise increased caution, with motorbike and scooter accidents among its concerns.
