Upolu or Viti Levu?
Choose Upolu for everyday Samoan culture, village beaches and beach fales from about ST$80 a night, if you can plan around cash and quiet Sundays. Choose Viti Levu for the easiest family resort trip, with direct flights from Wellington and Christchurch and higher scores from May to December. The decider is what you want outside the gate: village life, or a resort that does the work.

| The catch | Cash and Sundays. Upolu runs on cash and stops on Sundays, when most sights, shops and fuel stations close. Roads are slow, too. | The reef is a boat ride away. Nadi Bay and Denarau are built around pools, marinas and kids’ clubs, so snorkelling a reef means a boat trip or the Coral Coast. |

The real difference
Upolu is a culture trip with beaches; Viti Levu is a resort trip with day tours. On Upolu, faʻa Samoa, the Samoan way, shapes daily life: Sunday is for church, family and rest, and many beaches and other sites belong to villages that ask a small cash fee. Around Nadi, Viti Levu’s resort areas are built for easy family holidays, with nine family-friendly resorts on Denarau alone.
Each island’s catch follows from that. Upolu runs on cash and stops on Sundays, when most attractions and fuel stations close, and its roads are slow: the south-coast beach at Lalomanu is 1.5 hours’ drive from Apia. On Viti Levu the reef near Nadi is a boat ride away, and Tourism Fiji singles out the Coral Coast for snorkelling straight off the beach.
Both countries have more beyond the main island. Savaiʻi, larger than Upolu and quieter, is a 60–90 minute ferry ride from Mulifanua wharf, six minutes’ drive from the airport; our Samoa page covers it. In Fiji, boats leave Port Denarau for the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands, where the white-sand-and-coral days are; see our Fiji page.
Getting there and around
Viti Levu is the shorter flight from all three main cities. Both have non-stop flights from Auckland, but only Fiji has direct flights from Wellington and Christchurch. For Samoa, Air New Zealand connects you through Auckland, which adds close to three hours compared with flying direct to Nadi. The clocks barely move for either: Samoa is level with NZ in summer and an hour ahead in winter, while Fiji is an hour behind in summer and level in winter.
Driving is the bigger split. As of October 2026, Tourism Fiji says an English-language licence, such as your NZ one, and a credit card are enough to hire a car. In Samoa you also need a temporary licence, ST$21 for a month (October 2026), which the Land Transport Authority issues only to holders of a full overseas licence. Hire cars are easy to find on Upolu, and buses take cash. Viti Levu leans on resort shuttles, taxis and tours, and Uber doesn’t operate in Fiji.
When each is at its best
Both peak in the NZ winter, but Viti Levu holds its form for longer. Its conditions score higher than Upolu’s every month from May to December, and the gap is widest in October and November. That suits the late-September school holidays (25 September to 10 October in 2027).
Upolu has the edge earlier in the year. It scores higher in February, March and April, which helps if you are tied to the April school holidays (10–26 April 2027). Its sea is also warmer through the winter, at about 28 °C in August against 26 °C on Viti Levu.
Both sit in the November to April cyclone season, with the same storm record. Viti Levu’s wet season is the wetter: January brings about 370 mm of rain on Viti Levu against about 250 mm on Upolu.
Costs and practicalities
Both sit in the same cost tier, about NZ prices, but they spend differently. On Upolu the simple option is a beach fale, from about ST$80 a night (October 2026), usually with breakfast and dinner, and village fees for beaches are small. On Viti Levu, Nadi’s beds run from backpacker hostels to luxury resorts, and Tourism Fiji puts a hearty local restaurant meal at FJ$10–20 (October 2026).
Cash matters more in Samoa. Most resorts take cards, but markets, local restaurants and buses want cash, and ATMs need a PIN and sit mostly in urban areas, so top up in Apia before heading south or east. In Fiji, cards work in towns and resorts but usually carry a 3% surcharge, and taxis and small shops want Fijian dollars.
Sundays differ too. In Samoa most attractions and fuel stations close, though many resorts and restaurants stay open, so fill the tank on Saturday. On Viti Levu, resorts and tours keep running while many shops, banks and restaurants close or cut their hours. If neither suits, the island finder weighs both against the rest.
