Tahiti or Viti Levu?

Viti Levu is the better-value family resort week: a shorter flight, non-stop from three NZ cities, kids’ clubs and prices close to NZ’s. Tahiti is the door to French Polynesia for couples and culture-seekers who will pay more, though most lagoon stays are on Moʻorea or Bora Bora. Cost is the deciding difference.

  • You would rather hike to waterfalls or take a 4x4 up a valley than sit by a pool

  • You are flying from Wellington or Christchurch and want a non-stop flight
  • You want resort kids’ clubs about 20 minutes from the airport
  • You want prices close to NZ’s rather than above them
  • You want to drive on the left, as you do at home

The catchNot the lagoon island. The best-known lagoon stays are on other islands, beaches are unpatrolled and currents can be strong, and ferries or flights between islands add up.The reef is a boat ride away. Nadi Bay and Denarau are built around pools, marinas and kids’ clubs, so snorkelling a reef means a boat trip or the Coral Coast.

The real difference

Both are arrival islands, and on both the lagoon from the brochure is somewhere else. International flights land on Tahiti, but most French Polynesia lagoon stays are on Moʻorea, 30 to 45 minutes away by ferry, or Bora Bora, a domestic flight on Air Tahiti or Air Moana. From April to June 2025, the territory’s statistics institute counted just over half of all nights in its international hotels on those two islands.

Tahiti itself is for outings: waterfalls, guided 4x4 trips up the Papenoʻo valley, the Teahupoʻo wave and the Papeʻete market. Its beaches are a mix of white sand on the west coast and black sand on the east, and SafeTravel warns that French Polynesia’s beaches are unpatrolled, with strong currents even in lagoons.

Viti Levu works as a resort holiday in its own right. Denarau’s nine family-friendly resorts are a 20-minute drive from Nadi airport, and on the Coral Coast the reef starts just off the beach. Fiji’s postcard islands, such as the Mamanucas, are a boat ride away (see Fiji).

So the real choice is a French Polynesia trip, built around Tahiti plus a lagoon island, against a Fiji resort week on Viti Levu. The first costs more and suits couples best. The second costs less and suits families.

Getting there and around

Air Tahiti Nui flies non-stop from Auckland to Papeʻete in about 5 hours. From Wellington or Christchurch you connect, usually in Auckland. Viti Levu is about 3 hours from Auckland, and only Fiji has non-stop flights from Wellington and Christchurch, on Fiji Airways.

Tahiti is an hour or two ahead of NZ on the clock but a day behind, so check the date of your first hotel night. Fiji is at most an hour behind NZ.

Tahiti drives on the right, the opposite of NZ, and a travel guide advises against driving at night outside Papeʻete, where street lighting is limited. The bus links Papeʻete with the rest of the island, but every extra island means a ferry or a flight. Viti Levu drives on the left, rental firms accept a full NZ licence, and transfers, taxis and tours cover most trips.

When each is at its best

Both have the same dry season, May to October, and both are busiest in the NZ winter. Tahiti Tourisme puts French Polynesia’s high season at June to September, with higher prices, and Tourism Fiji says its peak coincides with school holidays. Heiva i Tahiti, the dance and chant contest at Place Toʻata in Papeʻete, makes July Tahiti’s headline month.

The NZ summer separates them. Both are warm and wet from November to April, but cyclones pass within 200 km of Tahiti far less often: about once in 15 seasons in our data, against about once in two near Viti Levu. In January, Tahiti still scores 70, a good rating, while Viti Levu drops to 51. If you must travel in the summer holidays, Tahiti is the safer bet, and Tahiti Tourisme lists November to March as its low season, with lower hotel rates.

Costs and practicalities

French Polynesia costs more, and the extra islands are where it adds up. On 13 October 2026, Air New Zealand’s sample one-way fares from Auckland started at NZ$493 to Papeʻete and NZ$351 to Nadi. Our cost rating puts Tahiti and Moʻorea above NZ prices and Bora Bora at the top of the scale, while Viti Levu sits at about NZ prices.

Entry is easy for both. As of October 2026, NZ passport holders need no visa for French Polynesia for up to three months in any six, and Fiji gives a visitor permit on arrival for up to four months.

Tipping isn’t expected in either. Tahiti Tourisme says a service charge has been included in hotel and restaurant bills since 2007. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most hotels and shops on Tahiti and Bora Bora, but guesthouses and small shops on outlying islands often take cash only.

Fiji’s card payments usually carry a surcharge of about 3%, and its plugs are the same as NZ’s. French is the official language in French Polynesia, with English spoken in tourist areas.
