Rarotonga or Aitutaki?
Rarotonga is the pick for families, tighter budgets and short trips: a non-stop flight from Auckland, a bus round the island and kids clubs. Aitutaki is the pick for a couple’s lagoon holiday, at the price of an extra flight and higher costs. With a week or more, do both: a few nights on Rarotonga, then three or four on Aitutaki.

Choose Rarotonga if
- You are bringing young children and want kids clubs and Muri’s shallow, clear lagoon.
- You want a non-stop flight: daily from Auckland, or from Christchurch from June to October.
- You would rather catch a bus than arrange transfers, tour pick-ups and a hire car.
- You have only a few nights and want them all on the beach, not on connections.
Choose Aitutaki if
- You are on a honeymoon and want an adults-only resort or the Cooks’ only overwater bungalows.
- You want long lagoon days: snorkel stops, motu beaches and a barbecue lunch on the sand.
- You are going from July to September, when Aitutaki’s conditions lead Rarotonga’s most clearly.
- You want a small, quiet island of about 1,800 people where the lagoon is the point.

The real difference
Rarotonga is the easy trip and Aitutaki is the lagoon trip. Rarotonga is the main island of the Cook Islands, with the international airport and clear, shallow water at Muri that suits beginner snorkellers. Aitutaki lies 220 km to the north: a small island of about 1,800 people beside a wide lagoon dotted with 15 motu (islets).
Who is travelling usually settles it. Families do better on Rarotonga, where the larger resorts run kids clubs. Couples get more from Aitutaki, which has the Cook Islands’ only overwater bungalows. Some of its best-known resorts limit children: Pacific Resort Aitutaki takes guests aged 12 and over, and Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort 16 and over.
Each has its catch. On Rarotonga, the tourism board says eating out costs about the same as at home. Aitutaki adds a flight, a connection and money.
Getting there and around
Aitutaki has no international flights, so every trip from New Zealand goes through Rarotonga. Air New Zealand flies non-stop to Rarotonga daily from Auckland, and from Christchurch from June to October; from Wellington, you connect in Auckland. Air Rarotonga then flies to Aitutaki up to five times a day in 40 to 50 minutes, and many flights are timed to meet international arrivals.
Book one ticket all the way: the Aitutaki flights are Air New Zealand codeshares, which Air Rarotonga says it re-accommodates at no extra charge. On separate tickets, allow its suggested 90 minutes after an international arrival and 120 minutes before a departure, or it pays no compensation for a missed flight.
With a week or more, do both: a few nights on Rarotonga, three or four on Aitutaki, then a final night on Rarotonga before flying home. Short of time? Air Rarotonga’s Day Tour leaves Rarotonga at 8am and returns at 5.30pm (6pm April–September), Monday to Saturday, with a six-hour lagoon cruise and lunch. At NZ$749 per adult in October 2026, before any fuel surcharge shown when you book, it is a long, costly day.
Rarotonga is also easier without a car: its bus circles the island both ways from Monday to Saturday, and clockwise only on Sundays. Aitutaki has no public transport, so arrange transfers with your accommodation and hire a car, scooter or bike.
When each is at its best
The islands share a climate: drier from April to November, says the tourism board, with occasional brief showers from December to March. SafeTravel gives the cyclone season as November to April. Air New Zealand says fares are usually cheapest in the wet season: December to March for Rarotonga, February to May for Aitutaki.
Our conditions scores split them. Aitutaki outscores Rarotonga from March to November, with its clearest lead from July to September, and it sees fewer cyclones nearby: about 1 storm in 3 seasons against about 1 storm in 2. Its sea is slightly warmer too, at 26–28 °C over the year against 24–28 °C.
Rarotonga is in our excellent band from May to November too, so a winter trip works on either island; Aitutaki is just the better bet for long days in the water. Humpback whales pass from July to October and can often be seen from Rarotonga’s shore. See how other islands compare in July.
Costs and practicalities
The paperwork is the same. Both islands use NZ dollars and their ATMs pay out NZ currency. As of October 2026, NZ passport holders get a visitor permit of up to 90 days on arrival, and you clear immigration on Rarotonga either way.
The cost is not: our cost tier puts Aitutaki above NZ prices and Rarotonga at about NZ prices. In October 2026, Air New Zealand’s lowest listed one-way seat fares from Auckland, for January 2027 dates, were NZ$586 to Aitutaki and NZ$341 to Rarotonga. A Muri lagoon cruise with lunch starts at NZ$115, while a full-day Aitutaki cruise with Bishop’s Cruises is NZ$230 per adult until 30 March 2027.
Medical care is the other gap for families. Rarotonga has a range of medical and dental services; Aitutaki has limited care at a very small hospital. Take insurance that covers medical evacuation by air, as SafeTravel advises.
