Rarotonga or Niue?
Rarotonga is the pick for families, beach days and flexible dates: daily non-stop flights from Auckland, a lagoon at Muri and a bus round the island. Niue is the pick if snorkelling, diving or whales are the point and you can plan around one flight a week, no ATMs and almost no beach. They don’t combine easily, because Niue’s only scheduled flights run from Auckland.

Choose Rarotonga if
- You want a lagoon beach where children can paddle, like the clear shallows at Muri.
- You want to pick your own dates, with non-stop flights from Auckland every day.
- You would rather catch the round-island bus than hire a car and get a local licence.
- You want ATMs on the island, so you need not plan your cash before you fly.
Choose Niue if
- You snorkel or dive and want water where visibility rarely falls below 30 metres.
- You hope to swim with humpback whales, from July to October, with a licensed operator.
- You would rather explore caves, chasms and rock pools than lie on a beach.
- You want dark skies on the first whole country accredited by DarkSky International.

The real difference
Rarotonga is a lagoon island; Niue is a raised coral island with almost no beach. Rarotonga has the clear, shallow lagoon at Muri, where beginners snorkel. Niue is limestone, cut into caves, chasms and rock pools. With no lakes or streams to wash sediment into the sea, its tourism board says underwater visibility rarely falls below 30 metres.
Rarotonga suits families, first-timers and anyone who wants easy beach days. Niue suits snorkellers, divers and couples after a very quiet week, who are happy to swim in pools and chasms, timed to the tide, rather than off a beach.
Each has a catch. On Rarotonga, the tourism board says eating out costs about the same as at home. Niue’s is access and planning: one scheduled flight a week, every night booked before you land, and no ATMs.
Getting there and around
Rarotonga is far easier to fit around your dates. Air New Zealand flies there non-stop from Auckland every day, and from Christchurch from June to October. Niue’s only scheduled flights are Air New Zealand’s from Auckland: one a week as of late October 2026, leaving Auckland on Saturdays and landing on Friday, Niue time. While that holds, a Niue holiday comes in whole weeks, so check the 2027 timetable first.
Both islands are across the date line, so book your first night for the arrival date. From Wellington or Christchurch, Niue always means a connection in Auckland, and a trip taking in both islands means flying back through Auckland in between.
Getting around is the other big gap. Rarotonga’s bus runs both ways round the island from Monday to Saturday, and clockwise only on Sundays. Niue has no public transport, so plan on hiring a car, and every driver needs a Niue licence from the police station in Alofi. Niue Tourism says the station sets Mondays aside for licences, so after a Friday arrival ask your host how they handle it.
When each is at its best
Both are drier in the middle of the year: April to November on Rarotonga, says its tourism board, and May to October on Niue, says Air New Zealand. Both sit in a November to April cyclone season, and our data puts each at about 1 storm in 2 seasons, though Niue’s official 2025/26 season passed with no cyclone activity.
Our conditions scores favour Niue for most of the year, with its clearest lead from July to September; Rarotonga edges ahead only in January, June and November. The sea is much the same on both.
Humpback whales visit both islands from July to October. On Rarotonga they can often be seen from the shore. On Niue, licensed operators run swims with them, with peak activity in August and September, though a swim depends on calm whales. Air New Zealand says most of Niue’s tours run from May to October, so a summer trip there gives up more. See what else is good in August.
Costs and practicalities
Both use NZ dollars, but cash works differently. Rarotonga’s ATMs pay out NZ dollars. Niue has none: cards work at major businesses, but some markets want cash, so withdraw at the Kiwibank branch in Alofi on a weekday, or at Niue Rentals or Swanson Supermarket.
Fares from Auckland start at similar levels. In October 2026, Air New Zealand’s lowest listed one-way fares were NZ$341 to Rarotonga, for January 2027 dates, and NZ$371 to Niue, for 20 April 2027. With one Niue flight a week, though, you take the fare your week offers. Overall, our cost tier puts Niue above NZ prices and Rarotonga at about NZ prices.
Entry rules differ. As of October 2026, NZ passport holders get 90 days on arrival in the Cook Islands. Niue Tourism says New Zealanders can stay up to 30 days without a visa, with a passport valid for three months from arrival, a return or onward ticket and accommodation booked for the whole stay. Its own visa-waiver list leaves New Zealand out, so confirm with Niue Immigration. SafeTravel says New Zealanders in Niue must have insurance that includes medical evacuation by air.
