Tonga
Tongatapu is the easy culture-and-capital trip; Vavaʻu, a second flight north with no Sunday service, is the one for days on the water.
Both are at their best from May to October. Tongatapu is the quickest to reach, direct from Auckland in about 3 hours.

How the islands differ
Tongatapu is the island you land on and the heart of the kingdom. Nukuʻalofa is the capital and home of the royal family, and the island holds the Haʻamonga ʻa Maui trilithon, the royal tombs, the Houma blowholes and churches full of Sunday singing. It suits culture and a hire car more than a beach week: most hotels are in Nukuʻalofa, a harbour town rather than a resort strip, and beach stays are few.
Vavaʻu, in the north, is the water island. More than 50 islands sit around sheltered anchorages, with the town of Neiafu as the base, and humpback whales come here to raise their calves. Days are spent on boats: whale swims, sea caves and coral gardens, sailing and game fishing. Small lodges on the outer islands are quieter still, at the cost of boat transfers.
Whales alone won’t decide it. The season runs from July to October on both, a little longer on Tongatapu, and licensed operators run trips from Faua Wharf in Nukuʻalofa as well as around Vavaʻu. The difference is what fills the other days: villages, history and Sunday hymns on Tongatapu, or more time on the water in Vavaʻu.
Our pick: Tongatapu for three to five days of culture with one whale swim, and Vavaʻu, for at least five nights, if the sea is the point. Families with toddlers will find Vavaʻu hard work and Tongatapu short on beach stays; the island finder shows simpler options.
Getting between them
Fly. Flights from New Zealand land at Fuaʻamotu on Tongatapu, so a Vavaʻu trip passes through the main island. Lulutai Airlines, which Tonga Tourism lists as the only domestic airline, runs regular flights from Tongatapu to Vavaʻu, Haʻapai and ʻEua, and the hop north takes about an hour.
The catch is reliability. SafeTravel says domestic aviation safety may not meet international standards, the airline is not an International Air Transport Association member, services can change at short notice and no flights are scheduled on Sundays. A commercial guide calls cancellations fairly common, so never fly back from Vavaʻu on the day of your international flight home, and confirm the domestic booking close to the date.
The slow alternative is by sea: Tonga Tourism lists Tofa Ramsay Shipping, whose booking listing at the time of writing shows one sailing a week, leaving Nukuʻalofa on Wednesday afternoon and reaching Vavaʻu via Haʻapai about 25 hours later, with cabins available. SafeTravel warns that ferries are often overcrowded and safety rules are not always followed, and suggests bringing your own lifejacket. We would fly.
Combining the two makes sense. Do Vavaʻu first and Tongatapu last, so a cancelled domestic flight costs you a sightseeing day rather than your flight home.
Before you book
Plan around Sunday. SafeTravel says swimming, sport, dancing, loud music, exercise and fishing are illegal on Sundays unless you are at a resort, and most businesses close apart from some resorts and restaurants. With no domestic flights, Sunday cannot be a transfer day: make it the day for church or a resort lunch.
Whale season is peak season. Tonga Tourism puts the main peak at July to October, with the Heilala Festival in July, and says rooms and activities need booking ahead. Lock in the domestic flight, a licensed whale-swim operator and any small island lodge first. December is a second peak, when many Tongans fly home for Christmas.
Outside those months, Vavaʻu gets quieter. November to April is cyclone season, and Tonga Tourism notes that some Vavaʻu operators close for the summer, so check yours is open before you book the flight north. See when to go for month-by-month conditions.
Carry cash. Tonga is a cash-oriented society, banks and ATMs are mainly in the towns, and cash is essential on outer islands. Withdraw what you need in Nukuʻalofa or Neiafu before heading to an island lodge.
